Introduction [Table of Contents]
BattleTech on Chat Gaming Online is played over a chat room, where none of the participants can see eachother, or eachother's record sheets. In the first beta testing of Chat BattleTech, players were able to quietly rub out a little damage here and there, or fire weapons that didn't exist. This set of rules rectifies this problem.
CGO BattleTech is played abiding to all of the rules and regulations stated in The Battle Tech Compendium or The BattleTech Master Rules. All of the rules stated in Maximum Tech, and any other level 3 rules are completely optional. These are only to be used at the agreement of every player, including the Game Master.
The Game Master [Table of Contents]
The Game Master (GM) is a neutral player that will monitor and regulate the other player actually participating in the game. The Game Master may not play on any on or many sides of the game and must remain completely impartial to game events. This is to keep all rolls unbiased. The GM makes all dice rolls and other randomized events.
Before play, the GM must recieve an accurate copy of all of the record sheets to be used in the game. The GM has the right and th duty to dispute or cancel any action that the GM finds to be illegal. Like a referee in hockey, the GM has absolute credibility and cannot be disputed. Any action canceled in this way may be re-made.
Inquisions [Table of Contents]
At any time, any player may ask any question about damage, weapon status, movement or any other information on any player's record sheets. Players may also ask a mech's position and facing (see: Map Notation). This question is answered only by the GM. If any player finds a mistake in his/her record sheets they must rectify the error immediately. Inquisitions may be made at any time whatsoever.
Map Notation [Table of Contents]
In order to play, all players must have a copy of the map being used to keep track of mech position and facing. Because no pointing can be done over chat lines, map notation is key in relaying information about a mech's position and facing.
Numbered Hexes [Table of Contents]
Some maps, such as the BattleTech Standard Map have all hexes numbered. In which case a mech's position and facing is said as follows:
Hex0514 facing Hex0515, level 0, light woods.
A mech is sitting in a light woods at the hex labeled "0514" and is facing the hex labeled "0515". The terrain is completely optional, but helps. However, the elevation level is NOT optional.
Notational Hexes [Table of Contents]
Some maps, including custom maps, do not have numbered hexes. In this case, the "north" of the map must be labeled. Along the northern edge of the map, all of the columns of hexes are labeled from left to right with ascending letters of the alphabet. Along the west edge of the map, all the rows of hexes are labeled from top to bottom with ascending numbers. These letter and numbers are used in determining a single hex's location. When ever there are two hexes on the same row, the northern hex gets precedense. See fig.4a below.
fig.4a
In notational hexes, a complete position, facing, and level are said as follows:
HexB3 facing HexC3, level 1, rough.
If a map has mroe than 26 columns, letters are repeated like on a spread sheet. IE: ...X,Y,Z,AA,AB,AC,...,AX,AY,AZ,BA,BB,BC,... You'd have to have a HUGE map to need more that two letters, but it is possible
Two or More Maps [Table of Contents]
Some games may require more than one map. For simplicity's sake, if the maps have different co-ordinate systems, map notation is used.
With numbered hexes, define each map with a letter. A hex is then defined as HexA0515, the letter being the map and the number being the hex.
With map notaition, define each map with a letter. A hex is then defined like this, HexB,AD27. Hex + Map Letter + , + Column + Row.
Part Hexes [Table of Contents]
In fig.4a, HexD1 is not a whole hex. This happens especially often with maps on paper. Mechs entering an unwhole hex are considered off the board and out of the game immediately upon leaving. However, notation is still used for these hexes for facing.
Custom Rules [Table of Contents]
As with level 3 rules, if all players agree the game may be played with any customized rules. This may include the editing, revising, or removing of standard rules as stated in "The BattleTech Compendium" or "The BattleTech Master Rules" and this document, "CGO BattleTech Standard Rules". This may also include the addition of any more custom rules.
The Golden Rule [Table of Contents]
The "Golden Rule" cannot be edited, removed, or changed in any way, shape, or form. This rule stands even over the GM. The golden rule is as follows:
HAVE FUN!!
This rule is to be made clearly known by each player.
