basics
To become a bit more specific, finally, following is a list and description of the game's most basic commands. You can figure out others by common sense and trial-and-error, but these should hopefully be enough to get you started: HELP. If you forget everything else, remember `help'. `help' provides information on a number of topics and, among other things, can also get you back to this introduction. If you need help on a specific subject, such as an explanation of a command, you can also try `help <topic>', e. g. `help help' or `help introduction' or whatever. SAY <text>. This will cause your character to say something in one of the languages she knows. By default, you will speak using your race language, i. e. an elf will talk in elvish, a gnome in gnomish, and so on. To switch to another language, use `language <which one>', e.g. `language human' to use the human tongue. Whatever your character says will be heard by everyone in the same room, although only those with some knowledge of the language you use will be able to understand you.If you want to address only a certain person, use `say to <person> <text>'. You will still be heard by everyone in the room, but it will be obvious that you're talking only to <person>. Since `say' is probably the most frequently used command of all, it can be abbreviated as just '. [Other standard commands for communication are `whisper' and `shout'; just look them up with `help whisper' or `help shout' to find out how they work.] GO <direction>.This will cause your character to move in whatever direction you specify. Most of the time, these will be compass directions, like `go east' or `go southwest',but sometimes it could also be `go stairs' or `go lake' or whatever. If there are any obvious directions you can move to from the room you're in, the room's description will show them; but sometimes there may also be less-than-obvious directions to go to, or even hidden exits. These you'll have to find by searching or just trial-and-error. Since moving into one of the standard compass directions is also a very common command, there exist abbreviations for these as well: n, ne, e, se, s, sw, w, and nw for `go north', `go northeast',and so on. [You might also want to look up `enter' and `follow'.) LOOK. Simply typing `look' will give you a description of the room your character is in, the same as you got when you first entered the room. `look at <object>' will give you a more detailed description of <object>; for example, `look at throne' will tell you more about a throne that was just briefly mentioned in the room's general description, and `look at dwarf' will tell you more about what this short guy you're talking to actually looks like. Since `look' is also used very often, it can be abbreviated as `l', i.e. just `l' or `l at <object>'. [See also `examine'.] GET <item>.This will make your character pick up an item from the floor, unless it's too heavy, impossible to move,or just not there at all. To pick up something from a specific location, use `get <object> from <where>', as in `get book from table'.To see which items you're carrying around, enter `inventory' or just `i'. To get rid of something you're carrying, use `drop <item>'. [See also `take',`put', `wear', and `remove'.] REMEMBER <person> as <name>. Characters you don't know yet will be described by their race, gender, and two other attributes; for example,`a stout fair-haired female hobbit'. To make the descriptions less cumbersome and the characters more easy to recognize, you can `file them away' by giving them names. Usually, people will tell you their names, but you can also use another name if they don't, or remember them by a nickname. Once you remember a person by a certain name, this name will replace the description whenever you meet that person, and you can also use the name as an object in commands [as in `hug lienna' once you did`remember hobbit as lienna']. COMMUNE <name> <message>. This will send the text <message> to the wizard called <name>, or to all currently logged in wizards if you use `commune all <message>'. This is a command for emergencies _only_, to get aid if you're helplessly stuck because of a bug or some other technicality of the game. If it's less than absolutely critical, please ask other players first [if you can]; wizards are usually busy improving the game, and getting swamped with questions will only delay [and sometimes annoy] them. Please, _never_ ask questions like `How can I get on with this quest' or `Is there a way around this wall, I think there's a secret room behind'; wizards aren't allowed to answer questions like these anyway. On the other hand, if you find you suddenly can't move anymore, or get strange messages telling you some nonsense about your mind and the fabric of space, or otherwise have stuff happen to you that feels Seriously Wrong, don't feel shy and by all means, ask.
