Pinhoti Trail Journal
(Session #3, The Last Leg, June 1998)

Thursday, June 25, 1998:
Coleman, Randall, and I (Tina) had a late start after setting up the cars (approx. 6 p.m.).  We began our hike at Co. Rd. 55 (Rabbittown Rd.).  Hiked approx. 3-4
miles in (past Choccolocco Watershed to a spot near a moderately-sized creek).
Even hiking a good way in the dark, we are about 4-5 miles behind schedule.    Hopefully, we will be able to make up the mileage tomorrow, originally just an 8
mile day, with an early start.

Friday, June 26, 1998:
After a long night of listening to loud frog calls, we were ready to start hiking at about 7:30 a.m. Randall decided to separate and hike back to his car this morning with hopes of meeting up with us later on down the trail.  Coleman and I took a 3-hour lunch break at the Shoal Creek Church.  (A little one room church with picnic pavilion.  Built in 1895.)  During the day, we experienced a number of animal encounters, which included turtles, tons of frogs (ranging from tiny, "tip of your thumb"-sized to larger, fist-sized), a six-inch green snake, several turkey, and a crane.  Coleman and I continued on to our planned campsite for the night, Pine Glen Rec. Area.  We found a campsite as far away from the other campers as  possible.  The other campers are in RVs mostly.  Soon after our arrival, Randall shows up and visits with us for about 30 mins.  Randall discusses tentative plans to meet up with us tomorrow and hike the rest of the way.  Coleman and I, half-kiddingly, make specific requests for refreshments should he return to finish the trip with us.  After a meal, we settled down for the evening.  It was hard to rest with the other campers just getting their evening started with barbecuing, kid's playing, and etc.  (Do you think they would trade a dehydrated meal for a steak?  HMMM.)  High temp mid 90s.

Saturday, June 27, 1998:
After another less-than-restful night (cars arrived and departed at all hours during the night), we were on the trail at 7:10 a.m.  It was a cool morning, temp was 64 degrees.  We saw a bunch of turkey (approx. 10, including young ones).  Coleman caught a glimpse of another crane.  At 10:30 a.m. and about 5 miles later, we were taking a break at Lower Shoal Shelter when, moments later, Randall walked up with a full backpack and a cooler with our requested goodies in it.  OH JOY!!!  He had parked on FSR 531 and had hiked in about 1.5 miles with hopes of catching us.  (cont'd)
