Two poems by Pier-Franco Donovan publlished in the anthology:

Summoning the Sea

An Anthology of
Contemporary Poetry and Prose

(University of Salzburg, Austria, 1996) p. 54

Il tempo scivola veloce
trascinando con sé parole
pensieri e linfa. Tutto è
breve, le idee vuote.

Lei continua a sussurrare:
non dà né pace né tregua
alle sue vittime, prigioniere
del tempo loro, costrette
a tradurre la sua essenza,
da frammenti di memoria
entro i confini del tempo.1

1 Time swiftly flows / dragging words / thoughts and lymph. All is / brief, ideas are void. // She continues to whisper: / neither peace nor truce / are allowed to her victims, prisoners / of their own age, forced / to translate her essence / from fragments of memory / within the bounds of time.

* * *

Avvolte nella più folta oscurità
chiare voci cantano inni al sole
da poco scomparso oltre le amare
volute del vivere quotidiano.

Modeste le parole pronunciate —
ma ognuna rimane, piccola fiamma,
a scaldare la mente tormentata
dal quieto divenire degli eventi.

2 Wrapped in the darkest obscurity / clear voices sing hymns to the sun / that has just set beyond the bitter / spirals of everyday life. // Humble are the words spoken — / but each one remains, a small flame, / to warm the mind tormented / by the quiet becoming of events.
