Dreams of Tomorrow

Part 34

You feel John teleport just a moment before a bullet whistles over your shoulder and you catch a mental image of him behind the soldier deflecting the rifle upwards. You shiver as the spot between your shoulder blades itches, knowing that John has just saved your life, and then recover your senses and follow John's example. You teleport.

You don't go far. You appear from thin air just the other side of the wall along which you were just running. A quick mental scan tells you the building is empty, everyone outside helping with the emergency work. You pull a box up to the wall and step onto it quickly looking through a window and into the gap between the buildings. The soldier's rifle is on the floor and John has a foot on it but despite that has his hands raised in a gesture of surrender. The soldier is facing him warily but other soldiers are closing in, attracted by the sound of the shot.

[Jay?] John calls anxiously.

[I'm fine, John.] You say a little humbly. [Thanks.]

[What were you thinking?] John demands angrily. [We need to get to the authorities in this place, not run away from them.]

[He was going to shoot, John.] You protest.

[He did. At you.] John reminds you. [We could have avoided that.]

[Why are you letting them catch you?] You ask as John takes his foot off the rifle and lets the young soldier reclaim it. You can see his lips moving but can't hear what he's saying.

[Partly because I think I can get them to take me to the commander but mostly because I don't want this many people seeing me teleport. The story of one soldier I can laugh off but if this many military men report something...well it might get back to people I'm anxious remain unaware of our presence.] He pauses as if reliving some bad memory. [Jay, just keep out of sight for the moment. I'm going to try to convince the base commander to tell me what they're doing here and evacuate his men.]

Do you:
a) Stay where you are?
b) Go for a look around?
