Dreams of Tomorrow

Part 43

For a while you do as John tells you and stay put in the gloomy building in which you have hidden. It appears to be some kind of dormitory or barracks and with everyone outside it is completely empty. Grateful for the opportunity, you sit down on one of the bunks and listen telepathically as John tries to persuade first the soldiers he is passing and then the base commander of the danger. With very little luck it would appear.

You are still listening intently, ready to support John if needed when three of the soldiers burst into the barracks. For a moment it is not clear who is more surprised, them or you, but they are the one with the guns. Even as two of them seize the personal effects they came in to gather and shove them into a bag, the third keeps you covered with his rifle. Resigned, you raise your hands.

You are marched across the base at gunpoint through a scene of near chaos. All attempts to protect or shore up the chemical vats appear to have been abandoned. Instead two trucks have been backed out of their protective garage and men are clambering aboard. Clearly John's words are having some effect. The soldiers of this command appear ready to leave with or without their commander's say so.

You are forced into the commander's office with little ceremony. The commander is a worried looking man with greying hair. After this long day, John is looking tired too and sighs with frustration as you are led in.

"So Corporal Ivanov was correct about there being a second intruder." The commander notes his eyes on John. "I have yet to see any reason to believe a thing you've told me. So tell me truthfully: Who are you? Where are you from?"

You feel John hesitate, all but out of ideas.
