Dreams of Tomorrow

Part 36

[We can't tell the truth.] You tell John, aware that he is undecided. [This man is part of the soviet military, John! Do you want them just to use us as weapons?]

Something about that seems to strike a chord as John looks the commander in the eye and begins to lie like a champion.

"We're attached to the supreme soviet scientific intelligence division. We learnt of the natural threat to this base but could not act upon our suspicions until a tangible threat was noted with the first eruption this morning."

"And you expect me to believe that they would send a young man and a child? And that they would not inform the base commander by telephone of your presence or deductions?" The commander scowls and his expression is cold. "Do not take me for a fool."

You open your mouth to protest but seemingly without moving the commander now has his pistol in his hand and it is pointing at you. You close your mouth.

"Corporal!" The commander shouts and another soldiers looks in through the door. "Take these two to detention, immediately. I'll deal with them after this situation has been resolved."

"You can't afford to wait that long." John says in the face of the gun. His voice is cold and chilling. "The volcano will explode."

[What do we do now, John?] You ask as for the second time you are marched across the base at gunpoint.

John's thoughts are angry and a little sad.

[There's nothing more we can do.] He tells you. [Either they will evacuate or they won't. Either way it's too late for us to do anything about the chemicals in this place. Tim says we only have minutes left.]

You are shoved into a windowless cell and the door slams behind you with finality.

[Let's go home.] John says tiredly.

You're not sure. There might still be time to find out what the chemicals in this place really are and to get them clear.

Do you:
a) go back to the Lab?
b) Try again at the base?
