Wood Lane Underground Station

Photographs - Page Two

On 10th August 2003 I was fortunate to be able to participate in a visit to the abandoned London Underground Railway station 'Wood Lane', used for filming the Thames television series The Tomorrow People.

As you can see, the base of the stairs is now very securely sealed, preventing any further incursions. This staircase is in the middle of the redevelopment area and will soon be destroyed.
Several advertising posters, dating from 1947, remain on the walls. Many have been damaged by vandals but several are still readable. This group of posters advertise 'The Individual in the Socialist State', 'Black Beauty' and a Chopin (?) recital for which tickets were on sale at 10'-, 7'6 and 5'-.
Another surviving advertisement is for the '1947 Festival, under the direction of Sir Barry Jackson, Season Opens Easter Saturday April 5th'
As this sign illustrates, Wood Lane's main purpose was for those wishing to 'Alight for White City Stadium' or to 'Alight for Exhibition' - reasons for both the station's creation and its closure.
Another view of the stairs - as you can see the bright green tile-scheme continues all the way to the surface.
And, just to prove I wasn't imagining all of this, one of me at the base of the stairs.
