Caladon brought his bags up into his weyr and set them down by his bed. He walked towards one of the small windows and looked out, watching the riders and dragons down by the lake. That actually sounded like a good idea but he hadn’t even registered for Oraenuth’s clutch yet.
He unpacked his things, which he had picked up after he had left the ring, and then stood up, looking around the room. It was somewhat empty, well the bedchamber anyway. There was only the bed, a large dresser and a worn out looking chair. He didn’t really care though, so long as he had the chance to be in a Weyr and Impress a dragon.
He walked towards the door and was about to open it when someone knocked on it. “That’s weird,” he said to himself as he opened it. A young man, roughly of about 19 years, stood outside his door. “Can I help you?” Caladon asked.
The man smiled and said, “Oh sorry, I’m just looking for an open weyr. I’m standing for gold Oraenuth’s clutch, are you standing for it as well?”
Caladon nodded and said, “Yes I am, but I still have to sign up. I’m Caladon by the way.”
The man put his hand out and said, “I’m Adair. I have a sister here, Ada. Have you met her yet?”
Caladon smiled and said, “No I’ve only just arrived.” He started to walk out the door but then stopped. “Hey, could you direct me to the hatching sands?”
Adair nodded and said, “Yeah sure. Just go down the stairs and make a right. There’s a big set of double doors but they should be open. Go through there and it’s only a little farther.”
Caladon thanked him and then headed down the stairs, hoping he wouldn’t get lost looking for the sands.
As he walked in he was greeted by a young woman, who smiled at him and asked, “You’re interested in standing for Oraenuth’s clutch?” She took a small clipboard from a table near her and said, “There are a couple male spots open if you wish to stand.”
Caladon nodded and said, “Yes I would love to stand. I was searched out today at a horse show but I never got to find out how I did. Would there be a way to find out?”
The woman smiled and asked for his name, writing it in one of the empty spots. After she finished that she said, “Well of course. You can go down to the firelizard hearth and Impress a firelizard. The hatchlings can fly almost as soon as they hatch so you could send a message back to your family in order to find out.”
He raised an eyebrow and asked, “Really, it’s that simple?”
She nodded and said, “Yep, it is. Just go back down the hall and to the left, down a short flight of stairs. At the bottom turn right and there will be a door. If you go through it you should be at the hearth. The eggs are kept in the fire hearth so they stay warm.”
Caladon thanked her and then walked from the sands, heading towards the firelizard hearth.
He walked in the door and saw a group of eggs lying in the fire hearth. A few were already beginning to rock so he took some meat from the table and kneeled down by the eggs, concentrating on one of the ones that was rocking the hardest.
When the shell began to break Caladon pulled back the shell and smiled as he saw a light brown nose poke through the hole. He helped the hatchling out the rest of the way and then handed the meat to it. The firelizard creeled and took the meat from his hands, eating it quickly and then creeling for more. Caladon continued to feed the firelizard until he warbled and curled up in his new owner’s lap.
He smiled and stroked his new pet and placed him on his shoulder so that he could stand up and register the little brown. After he had finished that he walked back up to his weyr and took out a sheet of hide and a quill and sat down at the table in the main living chamber.
Neolani, he wrote as he placed the firelizard on the table. I Impressed a firelizard already today and registered for gold Oraenuth’s clutch as well. He paused for a moment and then continued writing. How did we place after I left and the rest of the entries went? I don’t really think we did better than fifth, considering the competition. When you get this message send… He stopped writing and looked at the firelizard, realizing that he didn’t have a name yet. He thought about it a moment and then wrote, send Varken back to me with an answer. Talk to you later I guess, Caladon.
He rolled the message up and tied it to Varken’s leg, who woke up and warbled in curiousity. “Can you deliver this to my sister?” He asked as he pictured his Hold and his sister.
Varken cocked his head to one side as he received the image and then warbled, letting his owner know that he understood where he was going. Caladon smiled patted the brown, sitting back down in the chair.
The firelizard stretched his wings and leapt from the table, circling the weyr a few times and then disappearing between. Caladon raised an eyebrow in surprise. He hadn’t thought he would have chosen to go between. However, this got the message to his sister faster so he didn’t care.
He sat in the chair for a moment longer and then stood up, deciding he would take a quick bath while he waited for Varken to return with his sister’s response. He walked into the bathing room and was about to check the water temperature when he heard a happy warbling coming from the living chamber.
He walked back out and was surprised to see Varken already, this time with a yellow ribbon around the note. He untied it and unrolled the message, skimming it and smiling. He and Namurra had placed fourth, only beaten by Windflare, Hymandri, and Vetrin. These were some of the top runners in his area so he was more than happy to be placed right behind them.
He folded the message up and put it in the little basket that was on the table. He stroked Varken once more, telling him he did a good job, and then walked into the bathing room so that he could clean up before dinner.
