These pictures were taken during my most recent trip to Italy in July 2000. This time around I concentrated my travels in the Naples/Campania region and in Rome/Vatican City. For those who don't already now, the city of Naples is located on an active volcano. One of Naples' main attractions is the Sulfatara located in Pozzuoli where you can visit some of the sulphur pits of the volcano. The Italians say inhaling the sulphur fumes from active volcanos is supposed to be beneficial to your health, particularly for the respitory system. All I know is that it sure smells bad (like rotten eggs). Back in the day of the Romans, Naples was a very popular place to vacataion. The Romans would come to Naples, particularly Pozzuoli, to the Ampiteatro for entertainment. There are also many castles in Naples and this time around I visited the one in Baia. There are many catacombs and caves throughout Naples as well and I took a trip to the Cuma caves. Of course, a trip to Italy is never complete without a trip to Rome and Vatican City.
This is a picture of me sitting in a cave inhaling the sulphur fumes at the Solfatara in
the city of Pozzuoli.
