Ammonia is NH₃. This is the first step in the nitrogen cycle.
Nitrogen ( N≡N ) is fixed from the air to make ammonia.

This chemical is vital for plants to grow. It is the same
as household ammonia and eventually goes into building
protein that are the building blocks of life. This is the first
natural step by nature to use the reserve of nitrogen in
our atmosphere. The N≡N in the air becomes the source
of nitogen for two molecules in ammonia NH₃ + NH₃.

My latest understanding on this ammonia subject is; ammonia
does not travel through the soil. Ammonia isn't as soluable as Nitrate.
Both are plant food but one will move. One clings to micro clay particles. Added Feb. 25, '04
Took several years to learn this. It is what I have been studying.
