Extensions are small add-ons that add new functionality to Firefox. They can add anything from a toolbar button to a completely new feature. They allow the application to be customized to fit the personal needs of each user if they need additional features, while keeping Firefox small to download. In general, they work well - but there are incompatibilities occasionally. The set I list above are all compatible with each other, so you don't have to worry about this particular set of extensions. Extensions have to be updated to work with new versions of Firefox. Sometimes a favorite extension may lag behind Firefox itself. If you have programming skills, you can sometimes update an extension yourself to enable it work with a newer version of Firefox - for instructions, see Making extensions work in Firefox 1.5. By following these instructions, I was easily able to make Back IS Close version 1.0 work with Firefox version 1.5. Of course, this is no longer necessary with Back IS Close because the author has updated it (version 1.3) to work with Firefox version 1.5. |
