So you want to buy FF6 music...^_^

Even though Final Fantasy III (FF6 Japanese) for the SNES has been out for quite a long time, there is still some confusion about the soundtrack to the game. Yes, there *is* a soundtrack available! ^_^ I have set up this page to hopefully clear up some of that confusion.

For much more info on this and other FF music, check out my new FF CD site! I will update this page occasionally, but not much.

General info: The FF6 soundtrack, called the "Final Fantasy VI Original Sound Version," is three CD's long. As far as I know, it is NOT commercially available on cassette. The color of the first CD is gray, the second is blue, the third is yellow. The background consists of cartoon-ly drawn elements from the game; you can see Relm, the Phantom Train, and lots of Moogles, among other things. There are three versions available: the original Squaresoft one, a bootleg one made by the Taiwan company SM (SonMay), and another bootleg by EverAnime (EA). I have been told that the SM version sounds *slightly* inferior, and even then you can hear the difference only on a really good sound system. I have both the SM and SS versions, and in all honesty, they sound the same to me. ^_^ Otherwise, the songs included, and the order of the songs, is the same. For the most part, the differences are in their appearances.

See this page for more pictures of the SS and SM versions. I developed this page before EA came out, so my pictures do not include EA. I don't plan on including EA any time soon. ^_^

NOTE: All pictures of the OSV's were taken by myself. I've seen these pics be used to illustrate eBay auctions. I have no problem with that, but just *please* be certain you're using the correct picture in your auction! ^_^

The Squaresoft (SS) version

Catalog number: PSCN-5001~3. This comes in a double-CD container, which itself comes in a thin cardboard box. The liner notes are too big to fit inside the CD case itself, so I usually put it in the box for safekeeping -- kind of a hassle, but oh well. ^_^ It is mostly in Japanese, which I cannot read, so I am unable to tell you what the notes are talking about. *humble bow* Scattered throughout the notes are some FF6 characters, drawn by Yoshitaka Amano. It also contains a track listing in English.

Both the left and right sides of the CD case have the same thing: "FINAL FANTASY VI Original sound version" on the upper half, and the same thing (or so I assume) in Japanese on the bottom half. The back of the case has the Squaresoft logo and a bunch of stuff in Japanese along the bottom edge, including the price of 3800 yen. (It's probably the usual copyright info and things like that.)

The CD's themselves have the FF6 OSV logo at the top; the words "DISC 1 - SQUARESOFT" on the left (or whatever the disc number is); and the catalog number and the "compact disc" logo on the right.

The SM version

Catalog numbers: GAME-008, GAME-009, GAME-010. This version comes in three separate CD cases. All of them have the same logo as the SS version, only smaller and generally pushed to the left. The words "disc-1", "disc-2", and "disc-3" also appear directly below the logo. Disc 1 has an Amano picture of Terra on the cover; disc 2 has Edgar; disc 3 has Celes.

The backs of the CD's contain the FF6 OSV logo, the song names in English, a bar code in the lower-left corner, the "compact disc" logo in the lower-right corner, and the SM logo and information in between. The back of the disc 1 case is blue; the second is pink; and the third is yellow. The right side of all the CD cases has "FINAL FANTASY VI Original sound version". The left side has the Japanese.

The CD's themselves have the same background pictures as the SS version, but the color is noticeably darker. They have the FF6 OSV logo on top; "DISC 1" (or whatever), the GAME-number in a ribbon-like logo, and something in Chinese, all on the left side; and the SM and "compact disc" logos on the right side.

The inside paper cover of the cases is folded and has the FF6 OSV logo on the other side, so that you see it when you open up the case. The SM version also includes a cute sticker with the FF6 OSV logo and a customer survey (in Chinese!) between the fold of the cover.

Buying information: The Squaresoft version is rather difficult to get, but there are several sites that sell it. The ones listed below are possibilities. Tower Records *might* have it; you might want to check their site. I know that the Tower here in Hawaii sometimes sells it, for $35.99, plus tax, as of 6/00. I believe the SM version is available through Gamemusic Online for $42.99, plus shipping, the last time I checked (which was in 1998). It may be available through other sites; you're welcome to surf the 'Net at your leisure. ^_^

eBay auction site: WARNING! eBay is a HOTBED for the bootleg versions, and many sellers advertise them as being "originals," "from Japan." (Hey, so technically that may be true, if the person is selling from Japan but has a bootleg....) Always find out what the catalog number is!

If you would like to see more pictures of the CD's, please go to this page. I have taken photos of almost every conceivable element of these CD's possible, but if you still have questions, you can e-mail me. (Unfortunately, my old myecom address no longer works. Until I can set up a new email address, I will not be able to receive messages concerning this site.) And of course, comments are always welcome. Thanks and good luck in starting or adding to your FF CD collection! ^_^
