Personality: Yahiko has a lot of pride in being a Shizoku and does not like when people call him Yahiko-chan. However, he is a boy with courage and ideal. He is the head disciple under Kaoru and is learning sword skills from her but often quarreled with her and brought heaps of fun, joys and fights into the dojo. Yahiko believes women are weak and he has to protect them. He has a great sense of responsibility, and sometimes says things that seem beyond his age. Yahiko also works at the local restaurant to earn enough money to get a Sakabatou like Kenshin. His dream is to become as strong as Kenshin.
Background: Yahiko was born right when the Meiji era started. His father supported the Bakufu side during the Douran, and even though he could have betrayed the Bakufu and switched sides, Yahiko's father kept his pride and honor by fighting to the death against the Ishinshishi. His mother then worked as a prostitute in order to raise him, and died of an illness. After his mother death, he was picked up by a gang leader and was forced to become a pickpocket. He was caught by Kaoru when he tried to pick Kenshin's pocket but was free by Kenshin. When Kenshin found out that a yakuza group is using Yahiko, he went to the rescue. Yahiko protested and told Kenshin that he could have got out of the gang himself if only he was stronger. To fulfil his wish, Kenshin enroll Yahiko in Kaoru's dojo so he can become stronger and Kaoru can take care of him too...
Making of Myoujin Yahiko: Rather than having an actual model, Yahiko is more based on my own feelings when I was in junior high. When I was in junior high I actually joined the kendo club. At the same time, I was also involved in drawing manga. I was tired out everyday from swinging the shinai but I was really bad. Even though I was 183 cm tall, I was pathetically bad. Out of my whole ninth grade year, I only got to be one of the regulars on the team once. When someone dropped out, they voted someone else to come in ahead of me. On top of that, I finished the league meet without a single victory. That was the reason why Myoujin Yahiko is not a hero like Kenshin or Sanosuke, but a real-life person who shared those feelings of frustration and "wants to be strong". Lately, he is been used as a comic character, but I think it is better to draw him as the boy my readers can feel will be a fine swordsman five or ten years from now. Like Kaoru, there was no real design. It was time for the big-eyed, messy-hair boy you always get in boys' comics.
