Well, Ranma ½ is a manga masterpiece by the great Rumiko Takahashi based on the genre of Romantic Martial Arts Comedy. And it's a perfect title to the genre. Following a twisted storyline, and fantastic plots, Ranma ½ is the perfect comic relief!
Just what is the story? (As taken from book 1, an introduction.)
The story goes as follows :
Ranma Saotome and his father, Genma
Saotome are in China, on a training trip. There, they visitthe infamous
Jusenkyo springs training grounds, where each spring holds a tragic story
and a unique curse.
Of course, not being able to read Chinese in the brochure, Genma decides to train there. There, father and son Saotome fight it out on the bamboo poles placed there for training purposes. However, each cursed spring will transform whoever falls into them into whatever drowned there so many centuries ago, and Ranma ends up knocking his father into the Spring of the Drowned Panda, also known as "Xiongmaonichuan", transforming his father into a giant panda, with amazing agility. (The panda drowned 2000 years ago.) Shocked and unable to respond to the giant panda that is his father, Ranma is knocked into another spring, this one known as the Spring of the Drowned Girl, or also known as "Niangnichuan", where 'he' ends up becoming a 'she'. (The girl drowned 1500 years ago.)
This story then goes to the Tendou
Dojo, where Soun is awaiting the expected arrival of his long time friend
and buddy, Genma Saotome. After recieving a postcard saying that they would
be arriving soon, Soun gathers his 3 daughters, Kasumi (Kah-su-me), Nabiki
(Nah-bee-key) and Akane (Ah-kar-nay) together to tell them that his friend,
Genma Saotome, would be coming with his son and that one of them would
be his 'iinazuke', or fiancee, as part of an agreement he and Genma made
a long time ago, since Soun needs an heir to his Dojo. Soon enough, the
two arrive, but who Soun assumes
to be Genma and Ranma-kun turn out to be a giant panda and a pigtailed
girlclaiming
to be Ranma.
After his initial shock and faint,
Soun recovers slowly, and has to accept the fact that Ranma is a *girl*.
Akane then asks Onna-Ranma to go a round with her, in which Ranma wins
with little effort on *her* part. Then Kasumi calls out to Akane to take
her bath, but Ranma has the same idea. Finding some nice, hot, water, Onna-Ranma
takes her bath. Akane then comes into the bathroom, and finds a boy with
a pigtail climbing out of the bathtub. Screaming, she runs out to grab
a stone ornament near their pond to smash the "pervert" in the bath with.
Ranma-kun then comes out of the
bath, dressed in his chinese outfit.
Later, a human Genma and male Ranma
reveal their story to the Tendous, and Ranma is tossed into the pond, where
the Tendous witness the transformation. They then in turn have to choose
who has to be Ranma's iinazuke. They choose Akane, mainly because she hates
boys and Ranma is only 'half a boy', therefore the name Ranma 1/2. Of course,
there is still the issue of having Ranma seen Akane naked, and she proceeds
to make a lot of noise over the issue, but Ranma tells her that he is used
to seeing his own naked female body, which by the way, he states, is much
better looking than Akane's.
*Blam*
Akane slams a table on Ranma's head,
both because of that comment and because he beat her so soundly at martial
arts, a *boy* deafeating her!
Boy, what a way to start a relationship,
eh?
