Personality: She is kind hearted and accepts people as they are, but is quick-tempered. She has a strong will, and rules her dojo with an iron fist. She has no kin and was apparently living by herself before Kenshin arrived. She forms an attachment to Kenshin and often worries that Kenshin will abruptly leave without telling her. She is a terrible cook, which Sanosuke and Yahiko have told her though Kenshin does not seem to mind her cooking. When she gets angry, she swings her sword around and pummels the offending person.
Background: After the Douran, Kaoru's father started a dojou to teach a sword technique called "Kamiya Kasshinryu". This sword technique is for protecting people, not for killing. Kaoru's father wanted a world where a sword would be used to protect people, not to kill people. However, her father became involved in the Seinan war and lost his life. After her father's death, Kaoru took over the dojou and continued to teach her father's sword technique. In the eleventh year of the Meiji era, two brothers plot to take over Kaoru's dojou however, during this incident Kaoru meets Kenshin who helps Kaoru chase away the two brothers. And the story continues...
Making of Kamiya Kaoru: I did not have any particular model. If pressed, I would say Chiba Sayako of "Ryouma's Lover". It seems she is popular among my female readers. Some are not sure if she is strong or weak. To be exact, she is strong. To have been able to lead her own dojo despite having others in the same town shows her ability. If she seems weak, it is because Kenshin and Sanosuke are too strong. As for whether Kenshin and Kaoru will fall in love, even I have not decided yet.
Besides this, there was no particular design. Of course, a ponytail was essential for a girl who plays kendo. A sword, a kimono, a ponytail... since they are the only designs I have, drawing Kaoru is fun. In drawing "the guys should be cool, the girls cute" and I wanted to draw Kaoru cuter, so the patterns of her kimonos keep increasing, like she is dressing herself up even though she is poor and unrefined.
