Saturn has had little for 3D fighters - lacking the power for it to be very competitive with the PSX. At best the games are good, but hardly have the "flash" of the PSX 3D fighters. This game isn't a whole lot different, but it is a pretty good game.
If you don't have a PSX - or just love good games, this one is worth getting. I haven't played a whole lot of it yet, but from first impression - it is cool.
I'll give this game a rating of 9 for Saturn alone, and 8 for PSX and Saturn owners. The intro is not fancy - I was a little upset that it had no anime intro considering the good character designs - you have an intro demo of a battle - actual game footage and then a flash to the title screen - with the anime drawing of all the characters. Other aspects such as loading, versus screens and character choice screens are all nicely done - the characters are all made of very stable polygons and have enough detail to make it look good - the backdrop is the good old picture which blends well with the ground, but when movement is involved, you can see the perspective shift on the backdrop (moving in bands) - it is not too bad though and is part of most Saturn games anyhow - to extents.
Music is nothing special, but decent. I would say the most interesting thing about the game is the fact you are on the back of a dragon - you can move side to side and get knocked off - which leaves you fairly vulnerable - you can also do jumps on the dragons back as well. Nothing too fancy for special effects, but a good solid game. This title would have done more good a year ago... it does show age - especially if you've been getting some of the PSX titles such as Eretsvaju - with actual strands of hair on your characters... it holds up on the idea that it is a cool game with a nice twist - and that it is on Saturn - PANZER DRAGOON lovers shouldn't miss out on it - it compliments the games well when you get the need to do some vs. fighting. As I said - no eyecandy, but it is a good game and it's approach to the fighting game genre is worth the look. I think a DREAMCAST sequel would do really well.....
