Taito... Not one of the first names that comes to mind when talking about 3D games. Best known for BUST-A-MOVE and BUBBLE BOBBLE, as well as the DARIUS games; they have only really made one 3D fighting game "Psychic Force" it was released for Playstation a while back... not bad, but the characters were pretty blocky and had bad voice dubbing. Now they have made a sequel for the Dreamcast... how is it? You may be surprised....
This game is really cool. Visually speaking, it is extremely solid and wonderful to look at. The characters animate wonderfully and look great. It is even a bit better for judging Dreamcast power than VF3... the characters are jointless and seamless - even the fingers are well done. It is true that it doesn't have to worry about shadows and background interaction with the characters, but it helps to get a better understanding of what future games will look like.
I seem to remember seeing 13 characters - nice amount. Although there aren't 1 million and 1 moves, it is challenging. You have your life/psych bar, the more life you loose - the more psy energy you can build. Attacks are extremely visual and shows for some incredible transperancies and lighting. The backgrounds are breathtaking in some and are active to an extent (3D active backgrounds) I think the one I like best is the tanker shipwreck with the crashing waves.
The characters are very well thought and can deal some incredible damage. Some can set "traps" or temporary damage inflicting spells that float in one spot or drift, causing some trouble for the opponent. The music is pretty cool - I haven't listened too closely yet. One thing that bugged me is the first Psychic Force had an anime intro, a pretty cool one too, but not this time. They went with a 3D intro... not alot to look at. There are no fancy options that I have heard of when you beat the game... something that has to change ^_^
I really cannot say that there is ANYTHING bad about this game - I am very pleased by it. It is really cool. Fans of "Psychic" type anime should love this game, and anyone else after seeing it should think it's really cool.
I will give it a score of 10
The only reasons I would give it less would be lack of "fun" extras - ya know, Otaku stuff and lack of anime intro - I can't say about the ending as I haven't beaten it yet.
