Kamiya Kaoru became the master of her father's dojo after he was killed in the civil war. She lives with her two younger sisters and makes a living by teaching her fighting style to her students. She bumps into Kenshin while she is out trying to defend her school's honor from the "Hitokiri Battosai", who is using her father's sword technique for killing... it later turns out to be a former student using Kenshin's title as a coverup. Kenshin saves Kaoru just as she was about to be killed. He is invited to stay with her at the dojo.... he helps her to save her family's honor and earns a place in Kaoru's heart and home.
Kaoru is strong-willed and often very short tempered. She gets jealous easily and runs to Sanosuke and Yahiko to support her feelings for Kenshin - she seems afraid to admit her feelings for him as it may push him away. She believes very strongly in using her fighting technique for protection - not for killing. Though she has a disadvantage in a fight because of using a wooden sword, she makes up for it by focusing on tactics which use an opponent's weakness against them.
Now, when Kaoru has had a bit to drink - she tends to let her feelings out - and takes a few risks she dare not otherwise take. She tends to take on a shy girl attitude that is just too cute to describe...
