The Big P Pokémon Race - And They're Off!

by: Roberto Perez-Vila

Robert rides his Slowbro to the starting line. He glances around at all the people who have entered the race. He recognizes some of the rider's faces, but others are brand new...

Damian is mounted on Drake, his Dragonite.
Mithril-rama (Rilli) is still getting used to riding on Deimos, her Doduo.
Jon is trying not to get pinched by the many spikes on Jolt, his Jolteon.
John Laramie, not to be confused with Jon, is on Tara, his Dodrio.
Julia Aiyana is balancing herself on Tidal, her Starmie.
Felix struggles to stay on his Beedrill without getting stung!
Kirsty is relaxing on her Dragonite, waiting for the race to begin.
Sirius flies into the area on his Dragonite, Reis, having signed up.

Some of the Pokemon aren't mounted by humans. They have Pokemon jockeys...

Zeus, Purgatory's Primeape, is mounted on Hades, a black Rapidash.
Monk-chan, Gads' Mankey, is stomping up and down on Vinal, a Tangela.
Stallone, Sarah Jane's Machop, is holding on to Ferdinand, a Tauros.
Roo, Runt's baby Kangaskhan, is hugging Tiny, a Dragonair.

Purgatory, Gads Trisan, Sarah Jane, and Runt Cloverwood are on the sidelines, observing their Pokemon. They have monitors nearby that will show them the action even after their Pokemon disappear in the distance. Christy and Dustin are there to support their friends, though they didn't enter any Pokemon in the race. Gads cries out to his Mankey, "Calm down, Monk-chan! All that stomping must be giving Vinal a headache! You promised you'd be friends with Vinal, at least until the end of the race!" Monk-chan stops, knowing he'll get the chance to Seismic Toss his rival soon enough.

Robert, on his dopey Slowbro, lines up with the rest of the people at the staring line, in-between Rilli and Damian Fox. He notices something right away, "Where's Lara? I don't see her anywhere..."

The high pitched voice of the announcer shouts out, "The first part of the Pokémon obstacle course is a winding dirt road through the countryside, followed by the 45 degree uphill climb which leads to a 45 degree downhill slope! The third part of the obstacle course is the most difficult: crossing the river over stones. Once on the other side, the Pokémon must eat an entire bowl of food, climb down a mountain, then head for the finish line! Will all the Pokémon please head to the starting line now!"

Lara comes riding up on her Rapidash, "I tried to stop Dario from enterin' the race, but he already filled in an application! I'll keep 'im distracted, while the rest of ya'll try to win... for the Laramie clan!"

Dust fills up the area as Dario races up to the starting line on his Dodrio. He positions himself next to Zeus, the Primeape, knowing that Hades, the Rapidash, belongs to Purgatory, the guy who dared Poison his Dodrio.

Before any of the trainers present can get into a fight with Dario over all the Pokemon he kidnapped, the announcer shouts out, "Reaaady... Set..." All the red lights in front of the Pokemon turn green. A huge cloud of dust flies up around the starting area, and 14 Pokemon race down the track, at very high speeds!

When the dust clears, Robert is only five feet in front of the starting line, his Slowbro coughing at all the dust he inhaled. Robert mumbles something under his breath, pats the blue Shellder on Slowbro's tail, and says, "Bite harder." The parasite Shellder opens its mouth up wide and bites Slowbro's tail as hard as it can! Five seconds later, Slowbro shouts out his name in pain, drops on all fours, and runs forward quickly, trying to escape the creature that it has latched on his tail, unaware that its the creature he *always* has latched onto his tail! Robert hugs his Slowbro tightly, careful not to slide off, "Keep running, Slowbro! I'm sure we can still catch up to the others!"

"Faster Tara! Dario's already burst ahead of us!" John shouted. A quick check around, John noticed the Mankey-Tangela duo would be no problem, since they couldn't stand each other. However, that Kangaskahn and the Starmie were the most annoying, due to their speed.

"And they're at the 45-degree hill!" shouted the announcer. Seeing Tara tire halfway up the hill, John smacked his feet, more specifically the spurs he had on his boots, into Tara's side. Immediately the Dodrio yelled and went up to twice its speed, easily making the hill. Unfortunately, it kept going, and was literally on Cloud 9.

"Holy crap! John Laramie is going, going, gone! I wonder if he gets frequent flyer miles for that one!" The crowd sweatdropped at the lousy joke, then Gads threw a Coke can at the announcer.

Meanwhile, John crash landed, accidentally landing on Lara. The four laid there for awhile, until a samll van drove up tothem. A Pikachu popped out shocked the group, easily recharging them. John said sorry, then hopped back on and headed for the river.

"Hmm, aha! The left path looks easiest." Tara jumped on the stone, but failed to follow through. The stone dropped under water, as did the duo. Trainers that were nearby were too busy to notice, but if they had, they would have seen a small trail of bubbles travel throigh the water. Finally, John and Tara appeared on the other side. "OK, so I was wrong. Just be glad you're not Rock, Ground or Fire type."

"I always knew John was all wet, but this is rediculous! He's all washed up!" The crowd facefaulted, and the announcer was pelted with more Coke cans and even a PokéDex. "Oops! Sorry Dexter," came the voice of Ash Ketchum.

Back at the race, John reached the buffet hill and jumped to the center platform. Seeing other Dodrios fighting over who went first, John immediately seperated the food into three equal parts. "Left head, eat first! Center head, second! Third head, last! Only have one plate per head!" Tara agreed, and soon the food recharged her, and they took off.

In a bush, Butch stood a catapult next to him. "Boy, is this going to wreck the race good! Then our undercover correspondent will win the race, and Team Rocket will have control of the Laramie Clan! Fire!" Cassidy launched the catapult and a giant Blast-o-ball flew towards the Kangaskahn-Dragonite duo. John saw this, then stood on Tara. Once in range, John leaped off, heading towards the bomb.

"I got it! I got. . . uh oh." Kaboom! John had an up close and personal view of the explosion. He floated fora second, blew out a little smoke, then fell down and landed on Tara.

Back at the starting, Runt breathed a sigh of relief, and Gads mumbled, "That had to hurt." At the area where the bomb was launched, Butch said, "Dammit! It didn't work." Then, he got a hammer on the head by Cassidy.

"The Pokémon are now at the homestretch, and there's nothing left but a flat-out run! Who will it be?"

Slowbro slows down as he approaches the end of the dirt road at the start of the race, frightened by the upward slope ahead. Every single Pokemon has already crossed the hill when Robert arrives there. Robert doesn't lose hope in his Pokemon, and decides to use his special tactic, "Slowbro... Now's the time! Use Swift!"

Slowbro swings his tail around, and the strange blue Shellder attached spits out tiny stars! These stars collide with the dirt, and propel the fat pink Pokemon ahead against his will! Soon, Slowbro is rocketing up the hill, unaware that he is doing it until he reaches the top. That's when Slowbro *and* Robert scream... The Swift attack continues to blast them forward, and Slowbro flies off the top of the hill, much like John's Dodrio!

SPLASH! The Water Pokemon and his trainer crash into the River... hard. Slowbro floats up to the top of the water, facing downward, with his arms outstretched, still clueless as to the fact that he's all wet. Robert climbs onto his Slowbro's back and stands up as if on a surfboard, "Slowbro, time to do some serious Surfing!"

"Cowabunga!" Robert moves his hands into different ridiculous positions that he saw surfers use on television a long time ago. His Slowbro moves much faster on water than on land, and he soon emerges on the other side of the River! "Okay, Slowbro, now comes a ridiculous part of the race. You need to eat some food."

Slowbro just stares into the distance for a moment, his eyes wide open, his jaw hanging open as dopey as usual, then he suddenly comes to a realization. "Slowbro!" Knowing that food is ahead, the hungry pink Pokemon wobbles quicker than usual toward the bowls of Pokemon food. He slides down the mountain slope to his bowl of Pokechow and gobbles it all up in under five seconds!

Robert sweatdrops, "Now there's one thing you're *not* slow at!" Robert points down the slope. He sees some other Pokemon approaching the end of the race, "To the finish line, Slowbro! One more Swift!"

The first group of racers that Robert encounters on his dash to the finish line is Lara, Dario, Felix, and Sirius.

Felix is noticing that his poor Beedrill is slowing down from having to carry his trainer for such a long time, "Come on, Galahad! Don't get tired now! We're almost there! More Agility! Be one with the hedgehog."

Sirius is silent as he holds onto his Dragonite's reins, knowing that Reis knows what to do.

Lara and Dario aren't quite as silent. They keep squabbling, and Dario's Dodrio keeps pecking at Lara's Rapidash.

Lara shouts out, "That's enough, varmit! I'm gonna run ya off the road!"

"Whut?" Dario looks shocked, since the good guys never fight back.

As Lara's Rapidash spits fire at Dario's Dodrio, Lara shouts out, "Ya'll finish the race for the Laramie clan!"

Robert stares at the finish line ahead with determination, passing Lara and Dario, "Whew! I've secured 13th place! What a come back!" Unfortunately, Robert's Slowbro stops on the road and starts panting. Robert sighs, "Now I wish Slowbro came with jumper cables... Now what am I going to do?!"

"Prrrimeape!" The fierce voice is heard, as Zeus the Primeape comes riding in on Hades, the black Rapidash. They had fallen behind on the race and were now trying to catch up, embarrassed that a Slowbro was beating them...

Slowbro turns around to face the approaching Pokemon duo. While most Water and Psychic Pokemon wouldn't be afraid of a Fire Pokemon that is being ridden by a Fighting Pokemon, Robert's Slowbro is. The pink Pokemon's eyes go wider than usual, and he drops on all four legs and dashes down the road, trying to run away from the Rapidash hot on his trail. Slowbro carries Robert past Julia on Tidal, her Starmie, John on Tara, his Dodrio, Damian on Drake, his Dragonite, and even past Mithril-rama on Deimos, her Doduo!

Mithril-rama blinks as she sees Robert pull ahead of her in the race, "What the...?" Even Deimos is shocked for a moment, before he starts racing after Robert, who is still being chased by the black Rapidash...

Up ahead in the race, Stallone, Sarah Jane's Machop, keeps urging Ferdinand the Tauros to go faster, determined to win the race. He looks back to see a Slowbro catching up to him. He can't allow that, "MACHOP! MACHOP!!!" The Tauros he is riding understands Stallone's orders and he whips his three tails to pick up speed!

Sarah Jane's Tauros seems to not have much luck getting past Kirsty's Dragonite. The large flying Dragon Pokemon is effortlessly blazing flapping his wings down the final road, hovering over the ground much like the other Dragonite in the race, just much faster thanks to Kirsty's small size and the Dragonite's superior speed!

Runt's Dragonair is neck to neck with Jon's Jolteon... While a Dragonair normally wouldn't be able to keep up with one of the fastest Pokemon in the known world, the vitamins Tiny inhaled gave him the extra needed boost. They speed past Monk-chan, the Mankey, and Vinal, the Tangela, without even noticing them...

Monk-chan narrows its eyes, places its paw on his forehead, and sees that the finish line is close enough to be reached with just one more Seismic Toss. It snorts out insane laughter at the two speeding Pokemon ahead, and leaps onto Vinal. The Mankey grabs the Grass Pokemon and Seismic Tosses it into the sky, holding on tight...

The two Pokemon do end up ahead of Runt's Dragonair, mounted by Roo, and Jon's Jolteon, mounted by Jon. However, when they crash five inches from the finish line, the two Pokemon land wrong, and Vinal gets knocked out cold again. Monk-chan reaches its tiny paw out towards the white line before him, but passes out as well.

Back at the observation area, Gads Trisan continually knocks his head into the nearby boulder, and it suddenly smashes into bits from the constant wearing down from Gad's forehead! "Nooo! It's so close! Vinal can just extend a vine and it wins the race! One of you wake up! Do something! AHHH!" Gads breaks out into hysterical laughter!

Tiny, the Dragonair speeds up ahead of Jon's Jolteon... But Jon urges the Jolteon he's riding to go faster! Jon's Jolteon pulls into the lead! The two Pokemon continue using their Agility move, trying to beat the other out as they approach the finish line. They become a blue blur and a yellow blur. They cross the finish line! ... but no one knows which one did it first. The announcer cries out, "It's a photo finish! We gotta wait for the photo to develop!"

The sheer speed of the two Pokemon trying to outrun each other tosses Vinal across the finish line, a fainted tumbleweed of blue grass! Monk-chan awakens, sees that Vinal made it, and jumps up and down, thinking that its the winner, while it only actually claimed third place. But no one was about to tell that to an easily angered Mankey...

Kirsty speeds across the finish line on her Dragonite, knocking Monk-chan to the floor! "Yeah! 4th place!"

Robert's Slowbro is still running away from the Rapidash behind him, horribly frightened by the night-marish beast. Stallone, the Machop has actually fallen behind the Slowbro on the race to the finish!

"Machop!!!" The fighting Pokemon reluctantly slaps his fellow Pokemon, the Tauros he's riding. Fortunately, the slap isn't in vain, since it sends the Tauros hurtling past Robert's Slowbro, allowing it to claim fifth place! "CHOP!"

The Slowbro, completely oblivious of his surroundings, keeps running even after crossing the finish line, surprisingly taking sixth place. Purgatory's Pokemon, Hades the frightening Rapidash, takes 7th place. He is followed by Rilli on Deimos, Damian on Drake, John on Tara, Julia on Tidal, Sirius on Reis, and Felix on his Beedrill! Lara comes running in on her Rapidash shortly afterward, followed by a thoroughly burned Dodrio, a soot covered Dario mounted on it.

Jon leaps off of his Jolteon and clenches his fists, waiting for the result of the winner to come in...

Runt runs up to Tiny the Dragonair and Roo the baby Kangaskhan, and hugs them, "Great job, you two!"

Jon and Runt stand side by side, staring at a huge monitor that is showing slow-motion clips of the race. The announcer clears his voice and bellows into the microphone, "And the winner of the Big P Pokemon Race is..."

The monitor shows a huge photo of Tiny the Dragonair pulling his long majestic body, pouch and all, ahead of Jon's Jolteon, who is just inches behind the finish line. "...the winner is Runt Cloverwood!"

As the first, second, and third place winners claim their trophies and titles, Robert's Slowbro is still running around the countryside, having left the Racing area. Robert sweatdrops, "I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but you can *stop* running now, Slowbro!" The Pokemon ignores his trainer and keeps running without looking back!

"Now, now, Tara, you did your best." John was at the moment comforting Tara, who was devestated after losing to a Slowbro, Tangela, and Doduo - especially the Doduo. "Do drio rio" was all Tara said, its three heads all hanging down to the ground. Lara walked up, and after a minute of undecisiveness, patted Tara on the center head. "Good job on making the Top 10, though next time, warn me before you 'drop in'," she said to John.

John grinned sheepishly, then sweatdropped. "Sorry, I guess the spurs worked too well," Tara then pecked John in th rear, in return for the spur of the moment. "Ouch! Sorry, Tara!" John gave his Pokémon some food, then headed over to congratulate the winners. Oh yeah, and to sample that buffet.. "Ariel! Get away from there! It's not time to eat yet!"
