Sailor Moon episode 79

Episode title: Brotherly Love

Canadian Air date: 11/18/97

In Tokyo, the city was in panic, as Diamond's Dark Crystal continued to grow. Above it, there was a large vortex of darkness. Helicopters were circling the huge structure, and the people of Tokyo were fearful. The crystal was larger than most of the buildings. The five girls, Serena, Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina, were watching the news over at Serena's house.

"An ominous-looking, unidentified object appeared suddenly in the heart of Tokyo last night, stopping traffic for miles around, and putting the city in a state of frenzy." Said the anchor. "While government experts are currently trying to determine the object's origin and purpose, our city officials are encouraging citizens to exercise extreme caution, and to stay indoors, until otherwise notified."

"I don't have a good feeling about this." Came Luna's understatement. Lita asked Amy if she had a plan.

"Not yet." Amy replied. "First, I need to determine just how powerful that Dark Crystal actually is, and then the harder problem, how to safely disarm the thing."

Serena was very worried about Rini, and was feeling badly about losing her. She remembered the fight that she and the Scouts had with Wicked Lady. Just as Serena was burying her head in sorrow, her mother came in with a tea tray.

"I hope this invasion business will get settled soon." She said, placing the tray on the table. "Just you wait. They'll figure out it's some kind of hoax, or something."

Serena brought her head up, and looked at the tea tray.

"Mom," she said, jerking her head, "why have you..."

Serena's mom picked up a small cup. It was a pink tea cup, with a rabbit on it. In hand-writing, it said, "Chibi". With the five girls there, it was the sixth cup. Serena's mother couldn't figure out why she had brought six cups for the five of them. As she wondered, the girls were feeling down about losing Rini to the Negamoon.

"How weird." Serena's mother said, walking into the kitchen, leaving the cup on the table. "Oh well, I'll take it back."

Luna, in this time of sadness, reminded the girls,

"Once Luna-P left, any recollection of Rini should have been erased from your mom's memory."

"I wonder if a small part of her still remains in her memories?" Suggested Lita. Serena said,

"You know, until recently, I never thought I'd miss her." The girls all looked at her. "The house seems so empty," She said, choking back the tears. "without Rini tearing all over the place." She buried her head in her hands to cry, and Raye put a hand on Serena's knee.

"You'll see. We'll get her back!" Raye said. "Got to!" Serena sure hoped so. Raye leaned her head against Serena's, and said, "Come on, Serena. You've got to stay positive for Rini's sake. You know it's the only way we're ever going to get her back again." Raye and Serena looked into each other's eyes, and Serena smiled for the first time in days.

"Nothingness. Silence." Chanted the Wiseman. He was taking life forces, and crushing them like they deserved to die. His eyes glowed ominously. "The void. That's what the Doom Phantom thrives on. He is the ultimate arbiter of life and death in the universe! He is the one to whom I pledge my whole heart and allegiance. Now, that pathetic Prince Diamond, with all his illusions of power and conquest." Wiseman didn't notice Sapphire listening from behind a pillar. Wiseman went on to himself. "What a ridiculous fellow. Bring on the darkness! The chaos! The silence my master has commanded! No more petty human squabblings!" Wiseman looked into his crystal ball, and saw outer space. It was vibrant with color, and he saw galaxies and moons, and a bare skull, sporting the Negamoon crescent. Wiseman's crystal ball changed to mimic a small version of Earth. "All will be silenced the name of the Doom Phantom!" Wiseman shouted. From behind him, Sapphire watched, and glared. Wiseman heard a noise, and Sapphire ducked behind the pillar. Wiseman turned to look, but saw nothing.

Sapphire was walking through the palace halls, towards the Dark Crystal's Energy Absorption Indicator, and was saying to himself,

"I knew it! That conniving old man has been using Diamond all along!" He got the door, and opened it. The Indicator was glowing brightly, and Sapphire was surprised at it. He walked up to the railing that barriered the Indicator from the rest of the room, and looked to a floor panel. A small part of it was traced out in a square, and it rose upwards to Sapphire's grasp. It split in half, revealing a small transparent rectangle. Sapphire grabbed it, and the Indicator went dead.

"That'll do it." Sapphire said. "As long as I have this control chip, there's no way Wiseman can destroy the Dark Crystal."

"Sapphire." A voice boomed behind him. Sapphire turned to see Wiseman. "I'm warning you." Wiseman said. "Put that control chip back now!"

Sapphire stood his ground, and in his refusal to give Wiseman the chip, said,

"I don't take orders from you, Wiseman! Perhaps you've forgotten, old man. Diamond's running the show, not you!"

"You're very mistaken." Said Wiseman gravely. "My master, the Doom Phantom, is running the show. The big show, universe and all!" His eyes glowed white. "Too bad you won't be around to meet him!"

"This Doom Phantom creature." Said Sapphire. "I'm sure my brother would enjoy meeting him!"

"The Doom Phantom is the ultimate power in the universe!" Replied Wiseman. "And, he has opted to return it to a complete state of nothingness! He administers cleansings of all life matter at his own discretion!

"These cleansings..." Sapphire said, as if to ask a question. Wiseman replied,

"They're extremely effective, Sapphire. Let me demonstrate for you!"

With that, Wiseman formed a white ball of energy, and released a huge burst of white energy at Sapphire. Sapphire cloaked himself in a shield, and could barely withstand the Wiseman's attack. He yelled at Wiseman to stop, and when he didn't Sapphire teleported out of the chamber, along with the control chip.

"Hmm." Wiseman said, his eyes glowing. "He escaped me. He's stronger than he looks. I'll find him soon enough. I know exactly where he's headed!"

Meanwhile, Prince Diamond was sitting with Wicked Lady, looking into a viewscreen. It was focused on the growing Dark Crystal in the heart of Tokyo. Wicked Lady laughed at the sight.

"Dark Crystal's nearing maximum capacity!" She said, smiling.

"Yes." Said Diamond. "When it gets there, we will have enough energy to destroy this world, and those irritating Sailor Scouts with it."

"And, with this world trashed," Wicked Lady said, smiling hopefully, showing her interest in Diamond, "the future world will be ours!"

Diamond and Wicked Lady watched intently at the growing Dark Crystal from a large, crystal fortress...

Meanwhile, on Earth, the city was in panic, and the citizens were evacuating. Cars were jammed in the streets, though none walked on the sidewalks. That is, except for four young women. They were Catsy, Birdy, Avery, and Prisma.

"This looks bad." Catsy said, looking at the traffic.

"It's from the Negamoon, I know it!" Said Birdy.

"You think they've finally come from the future to take us back?" Asked Avery. Prisma was staring at the Dark Crystal, and didn't know what the Negamoon's move was going to be. She looked across the street to see a form duck into an alley. The form was familiar to her.

"Sapphire?"

"Are you kidding!?" Said Avery. Sapphire was stumbling weakly through a park nearby, and he saw where he had to get to. Diamond's crystal fortress hovered low over the city, and that was Sapphire's destination. Sapphire was weak and badly hurt. He leaned against a tree, and pleaded weakly,

"Diamond! Diamond, Wiseman is just using you, and..." Sapphire collapsed to the ground. "Sweet...smell...of green...grass." He could barely whisper. He recalled a time when he and Diamond were on Nemesis together.

"Diamond!" Exclaimed young Sapphire. "Look at this! A flower!"

"Yes!" Replied young Diamond. "Beautiful!"

"We never see flowers!" Sapphire said. Diamond replied,

"No, we don't. This is the only kind of flower left on Nemesis. There aren't many left. If we hadn't been banished from Earth, we'd see all kinds of flowers all the time. One day, I'll invade Earth, and get us back there!"

"Yes! You can do it, Diamond!" Sapphire said, smiling eagerly. "I know you can! And you will!" Just then, a voice came from behind them.

"Time for your lessons, prince." The voice said.

"Why now, Wiseman!?" Sapphire screamed angrily. Suddenly, the adult Diamond was standing with Wiseman, and Sapphire himself was an adult. "Diamond!" Sapphire pleaded. "Don't listen to him! He'll destroy you! Please! Diamond! Diamond!!!"

Sapphire awoke, calling out his brother's name. He was wrapped in bandages, and the pain from jerking awake brought him back to his mattress. He was in a bed, and had his jacket off. The bandages on his forehead covered his Negamoon crescent. He was in a room somewhere, and it was then that a familiar person walked through the door.

"Hey there." Said the person, gently. The person was Prisma. She was carrying a tray for Sapphire. "You're awake Sapphire. Here's some food." Sapphire looked at Prisma for a second, surprised at who it was. Sapphire asked where he was, and Prisma said that he was in her room. She walked over to the bed, and sat down on a chair.

"So, this is where you and your sisters have been living ever since you betrayed us, Prisma." Sapphire said weakly. Prisma, discouraged by Sapphire's remark, fought it bravely.

"I'm ready to accept the penalty." She said. "But, just take me. I beg you to forgive my sisters. Please, it was all my idea."

Sapphire smiled at his hostess warmly, and chuckled.

"You don't have to worry." He said reassuringly. "Believe me, Prisma. I'm not here as an executioner." Behind Prisma, at her bedroom door, her other sisters were listening in on the conversation. Birdy and Catsy closed the door, and were left in wonder.

"She's so nice to him." Commented Catsy. "So, when did she stop despising men?"

"What if he's come to terminate us?" Wondered Birdy. Then, she said, in her naiveté, "I mean, shouldn't we be fleeing for our lives, or something?"

All this time, Avery had been in deep thought. She spoke up.

"I don't think that's why he's here." Avery said. Her sisters looked at her in wonder. "I think we should leave them alone for a while." Avery said.

"What are you talking about?" Birdy asked. Avery, with tears of sympathy in her eyes, said teasingly,

"Prisma and Sapphire used to be an item!"

"What?!" Screamed Prince Diamond. He and Wicked Lady were confronted by Wiseman in Diamond's flying crystal fortress.

"I don't know why Sapphire betrayed you." Wiseman said calmly. "But, he stole the control chip from the Dark Crystal's Energy Reactor. I have no explanation, but sabotage. We must get that control chip back, and he must be punished for his treasonous behavior!"

"But, why?" Asked Diamond, quite shocked at Wiseman's measure. "Sapphire wouldn't betray me! I just can't believe it!"

"Does this mean you want to abandon your plan to re-conquer Earth?" Wiseman asked.

"Let me go." Said Wicked Lady. "I'll be glad to handle this ugly little business for you, your highness!" With that, Wicked Lady disappeared, and so did Wiseman.

"I can't believe my brother would betray me!" Diamond said to himself, fuming.

Sapphire's jacket hung on Prisma's wall, and Prisma prepared the food by Sapphire's bedside. She gave it to him.

"Hope you like it." She said gently, with a warm smile. Sapphire took it with a gracious thanks.

"You're...different." Sapphire said. Prisma looked at Sapphire intently. "How can I say this? Being with you right now makes me feel so calm." Prisma blushed, and smiled softly.

"We've learned a lot about human kindness, and caring, and trusting, from Sailor Moon and the other Sailor Scouts." Prisma replied quietly. Sapphire could only repeat Sailor Moon's name. "I guess if you were to compare our life on Nemesis with life here, you would find it very inconvenient here. But, it's filled with warmth and kindness, and we're all happier living here. I get this wonderful peaceful feeling inside, knowing that we all can live by trusting and caring for each other."

Sapphire thought about Prisma's words, then frowned slightly, as he remembered the large clouds of dark energy destroying the beauteous Crystal Tokyo. I wonder if we're doing the right thing. Sapphire thought. We've always wanted revenge on Earth for banishing us to Nemesis. But, our tactics are too drastic. And now, when I think about what Wiseman wants to do...

Sapphire's head began to hurt, and Prisma asked if he was alright.

"I must see Diamond!" Sapphire said weakly. "Now!" Sapphire tried to get up, but he felt the pain in his body, and fainted onto the bed. Prisma said,

"But, you're not well enough!"

"Prisma," Sapphire said in reply, "take my jacket." He writhed in pain, and Prisma simply said,

"You need to rest. You can't possibly go anywhere now, Sapphire."

"I can't waste time." Sapphire said, struggling to get out of bed. Prisma tried to stop him, but to no avail. "I've gotta let him know what Wiseman's really up to, right away." Sapphire said, referring to Prince Diamond.

"But, Sapphire!" Prisma pleaded, hugging Sapphire lovingly.

"Prisma."

"Oh, Sapphire." Prisma said, crying. "I just don't want to lose you again! If you go to Prince Diamond, you'll be in terrible danger, and you might..." Prisma fought back her sadness. "You might..." Her tears were becoming more prevalent. "You might...lose your life!"

Sapphire looked tenderly at the woman who hugged him so. Prisma's tears fell to the floor, and Sapphire didn't want to see the woman whom he had once loved so sad.

"Oh, Prisma," he said, softly, "there's just no other way." Prisma looked up at him, tears streaming down her face. "Just think about it." Sapphire continued, not wanting to hurt Prisma anymore. "If you were in my position, and your sisters were in grave danger, wouldn't you try to help them?" Prisma looked to Sapphire, sobbing. "You know that Prince Diamond is my only brother." Sapphire said, smiling comfortingly. "And, I have to protect him." He was holding Prisma by her shoulders. "Please, don't worry Prisma." He said. "I'll make him listen to me."

Prisma sobbed at the man she so truly loved, and Sapphire smiled at the woman who now had his heart. When Sapphire finally left, Prisma was standing on the balcony of the sisters' apartment, and was remembering what Sapphire said before he left.

"As soon as I talk to him," Sapphire said. "I'll come right back to you. Keep my jacket 'till I return."

Prisma, looking at the sunset, began to cry into Sapphire's jacket, which she held so dearly. Inside, Catsy, Birdy, and Avery were watching her.

"Why is she letting him go back to Diamond all by himself?" Catsy asked. "He's not fit to do that!"

"I think we should go after him, and try to help." Said Birdy.

"How can we possibly help him?" Avery asked. "We're not what we used to be. We'd only get in his way. The only thing we can do is wait for him." The three sisters looked at Prisma, who was still out on the balcony.

The phone rang at Serena's house. She picked up, and it was Catsy. Catsy told Serena that she needed help.

Meanwhile, Sapphire was making his way through the streets of Tokyo. He struggled through an alley, and made it to the other side, to see the Dark Crystal. Suddenly, Wicked Lady appeared above him.

"Well, well!" Wicked Lady said, hovering high above Sapphire, who was looking at the Dark Crystal behind the lady. "I guess I should say thank you for saving me the trouble of looking for you!"

"Get out of my way, Wicked Lady!" Sapphire said. "I've got something important to tell Diamond!"

"Have you really?" Wicked Lady said, smiling. "I don't think he really wants to hear from you!" With that, she raised her Luna Sphere. As she was about to throw it at Sapphire, who was standing his ground, she was interrupted.

"Stop right there!" A voice called out. Sapphire looked over to where the voice had come from.

"Sailor Moon!"

"Huh. Sailor Moon." Wicked Lady repeated, undaunted by the appearance of the Sailor Scouts.

"Listen to me, Rini." Sailor Moon pleaded. "You mustn't hurt Sapphire! I won't let you!" Sapphire was shocked at Sailor Moon's words. "Don't you know you've been brainwashed?" Sailor Moon shouted to Wicked Lady. "Rini, listen to me! Come back!"

"Wrong again, you big Meatball Head!" Replied Wicked Lady. "Now, back off, while I dispense with this cowardly traitor!"

"Please, Rini!" Sailor Moon said. "This isn't the real you!"

"Yeah, right!" Wicked Lady said, bouncing her Luna Sphere on the ground.

"LUNA SPHERE KITTY MAGIC!"

With that, the Luna Sphere changed into a magnifying glass. Wicked Lady held it up to the Dark Crystal, and the glass used the Crystal to fire a bolt of energy at the Sailor Scouts. She missed, and the Scouts countered.

"VENUS CRESCENT BEAM!"

Wicked Lady shot another bolt of energy at Venus' Crescent Beam, and the beam was negated.

"MERCURY BUBBLES BLAST!"

The fog that suddenly surrounded Wicked Lady was cold, and Wicked Lady could feel it. Sailor Mars and Sailor Jupiter came to Sapphire's defense.

"Why are you doing this?" Sapphire asked. Sailor Mars replied,

"Sapphire, if you've gotta go see Diamond, now's the time to go!"

"I don't understand why you helped me." Sapphire replied. Sailor Jupiter scratched her head.

"Well, Sapphire," she said, "we're not exactly sure ourselves! But, Catsy and her sisters asked us if we would."

"You're crazed!" Sapphire said. "You could be walking into a trap!"

"Yeah, that's always possible," replied Mars, "but, since Catsy and her sisters are friends of ours, I really don't think that's likely!"

"Guess a guy like you wouldn't know about trust and friendship." Added Jupiter, smiling. She winked, saying, "You should try it sometime! You might like it!"

Sapphire was in wonder. Meanwhile, Wicked Lady was preparing for her retort to the Sailor Scouts.

"Enough with the chit-chat!" She said. "I'm feeling neglected!"

With that, her magnifying glass changed into a giant fan, and with one mighty wave, Wicked Lady blew all the fog away from the area.

"No, Rini!" Sailor Moon shouted. "You're fighting for the bad guys!"

"MOON CRYSTAL POWER!"

"That tired old trick is so stale!" Wicked Lady quipped, quickly turning the fan into a large umbrella. Wicked Lady hid behind it, while the powers of the Silver Crystal were projected at her. Sailor Moon stopped her Crystal, and Wicked Lady had her chance to strike. She changed the umbrella into a badminton racquet, and a birdie, and smashed the birdie at the Sailor Scouts. It sailed at them quickly.

"VENUS LOVE CHAIN..."

Sailor Venus stopped, and stared in wonder, as the birdie had stopped moving. Suddenly, the feathers of the birdie opened, and a dome of black energy encased Sailor Moon, Sailor Venus, and Sailor Mercury. The black energy coursing through it was electrocuting the Sailor Scouts. Jupiter and Mars looked in panic.

"You should go now, and help your friends." Said Sapphire. "You've done more than enough for me!" Mars and Jupiter turned to him, and objected. Sapphire looked at the Sailor Scouts being electrocuted in the dome. "Please, don't worry." Sapphire said. "I'll be alright. I'll go talk to my brother now."

Sapphire looked up, and saw his brother, Prince Diamond, hovering near the Dark Crystal. Sapphire called out to Diamond. He told Jupiter and Mars to help the other Sailor Scouts. When Diamond addressed Sapphire, Sapphire walked out into the middle of the road, to talk to his brother.

"Sapphire!" Diamond exclaimed. "Sapphire, why did you betray me?"

"How could I betray my own brother?" Sapphire replied. "Diamond! We've been manipulated by Wiseman all along!"

Meanwhile, Wicked Lady encased Jupiter and Mars in another dome of dark energy. Accordingly, the dome began to electrocute them.

"Are you out of your mind, Sapphire?" Diamond screamed angrily. "I'd never let anyone derail my plans for Earth! Not even you!"

"Diamond!" Sapphire pleaded. "It's not your plan anymore, is it, brother? Think back to our original objectives! They weren't anything like this! You're Wiseman's puppet now!"

As Sapphire was saying his words, Sailor Moon looked up at Wicked Lady, who was smiling at her work.

"You're being used!" Sapphire continued. "Diamond!" Diamond let the words of Sapphire sink in. Wicked Lady turned to Sapphire.

"Cut the histrionics, drama queen!" She warned. "You're history!"

She got out another badminton birdie. Before she could do anything, something smashed into it, knocking out of her hand. The birdies that were already over the Sailor Scouts were smashed too, and the domes disappeared. Wicked Lady looked to a light post, to see the birdie pinned to it by a rose.

"Not you again!" Wicked Lady complained. She looked over to Tuxedo Mask, who was standing on the sidewalk nearby.

"Stop where you are, Rini." He said. He looked to Diamond. "And, Diamond," he said, "you must listen to Sapphire. Hear what he has to say about what's happening in the future! Listen carefully!"

"So, tell me." Diamond said, looking to his crippled brother. "What is happening in the future?"

"It's Wiseman!" Sapphire exclaimed. Suddenly, on Sapphire's face, there was a look of grave fear. Diamond's eyes widened, as he heard an energy surge behind him. Suddenly, Sapphire was struck with an intense energy. Weakened, Sapphire couldn't defend himself. He sank to his knees, in the crater that surrounded him.

"Sa...Sapphire!" Exclaimed Diamond. He turned around to see Wiseman, hovering over, and behind him. "Wiseman!" He screamed in anger.

"Sapphire has betrayed you." Wiseman replied calmly. "He's a liar, and a traitor! And, you know what we do to traitors, even if he is your brother!"

Diamond looked behind him, as Sapphire struggled to his feet.

"Diamond!" Sapphire shouted. "Wiseman's the traitor! Ask him about the Doom Phantom!"

"Silence, traitor!" Yelled Wiseman, powering up another blast. Prince Diamond could only watch helplessly, as Wiseman shot another blast of energy at Sapphire. The blast was enough this time. Sapphire fell. A small rectangle floated up to Wiseman.

"Ah, good." Wiseman said. "The stolen control chip." His eyes began to glow again. "We'll get the energy reactor operational again, and continue our with our plans for Earth! Forget about his cowardly traitor!" He said that last sentence to Diamond, who looked in horror at the work of Wiseman. Sapphire was lying in the crater of the road, lifeless.

"He got what he deserved." Wiseman added. "Diamond! Wicked Lady! We have much to do! Come!" Diamond glared at the Wiseman as he disappeared.

"You're the Wiseman!" Wicked Lady said, disappearing herself. Diamond looked downwards behind him. He looked in sorrow, as he saw Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon, tending to his fallen brother.

"I'm sorry." Tuxedo Mask said to Sailor Moon. "I just couldn't protect him."

Prisma felt something happen to someone she cared about, and the hanger that held up Sapphire's jacket broke. Sapphire's bandage fell off his forehead, revealing it for the first time on Earth. On his forehead, the Negamoon crescent was gone.

"Oh Prisma." He whispered weakly. "I'm sorry..."

Sapphire's body went limp.

"Sapphire!" Sailor Moon pleaded. "You can't leave Prisma!" The other Sailor Scouts were crying. "Come on!" She pleaded. "Hang on, Sapphire! No!" She called out to Diamond. She began to cry at the loss of her new friend, and Tuxedo Mask looked up to see Prince Diamond walking towards them. When Diamond got near, Sailor Moon jerked back in fear, but Diamond only picked up his brother. He looked at Sapphire's limp, lifeless body, and began to cry. He frowned furiously.

"Wiseman."

As he turned to leave, he disappeared. He had realized that his brother, Sapphire, the noblest of men from the Negamoon, had gone. Prince Sapphire was dead.

Sailor Moon watched as Diamond disappeared with the lifeless body of his brother.

That night, Prisma was looking at the Dark Crystal out one of the windows. She already knew about the death of Sapphire, long before the Sailor Scouts had to tell her.

Sapphire, she thought, wherever you are, you'll live in my heart forever. As Prisma sent her thoughts out to Sapphire, she remembered his warm smile, and felt warmth in her heart. I'll always remember that smile of yours. She thought.

Too bad it was your last...
