According to the *official* Studio Ghibli Home Page
(http://www.ntv.co.jp/ghibli/info/video.html),
Mononoke Hime will be theater released in the US this winter by Miramax.
I guess until Miramax changes the schedule (that is very much possible), this
is the "official" release date.
The page is about the Mononoke Hime video to be released in Japan.
Good News: Laserdisc will be released on 6/26 at the price of 7,800 yen by
Tokuma Japan Communications. It comes with the movie trailers of MH.
If you preorder the video now, you will receive a Kodama key holder.

- There is a rumor (reported on the ML by Ryoko Toyama) that MH will be released in Japan on video
on June 27th.

I was eventually able to contact Gaiman through another person - who'd
rather not be named - and this is what the Sandman author had to say:
I'm not actually translating it. There is already a literal translation
of the 'Great Beast, who comes from a place no-one knows, still your
wrath and do not stay here" kind. What I'm doing is turning it into
lines that people can say.
As for why:
A) Harvey Weinstein asked me, and he asked very nicely.
B) It's fun. Everything else I'm working on at present has to come out
of my head. This already exists, so I get to use a different set of
writing muscles.
C) It's a challenge. I've never done anything like this before, and
probably never will again.
D) If Leonardo DiCaprio plays Ashitaka, I get an autograph
for my 12 year old daughter.
E) I like the film.

The Sandman series, and this is Great News!

Neil Gaiman emailed me a few days ago to tell me that he has agreed to
write the English translation of Princess Mononoke for Miramax. Neil is a
truly great writer whose works include The Sandman (the only comic to ever
win the World Fantasy Award), Good Omens (with Terry Pratchett), Neverwhere,
and a host of short stories and poems.

- It seems that a subbed version of MH is not a certainty after all.
The decision will be made later, and I will of course report it here.
- Ryoko wrote on the ML about another award:
BUNKA-CHO (Agency for Cultual Affairs, Government of Japan) chose Mononoke Hime
for one of their "Excellent Movies" this year.
Bunka-Cho has a program which awards excellent artists and arts every year.
(Past Ghibli movies have been also selected as "Excellent Movies" in the
past.)

MH was chosen as the Best Movie of the Year by Japan Academy of Motion
Pictures, beating "Unagi" and other strong competitors..
Mera-San also received the Best Song of the Year for his Mononoke Hime song,
and Mr. Tokuma, the president of Tokuma Publishing and the executive producer
of MH, received "Special Award by the Chairman of the Academy".
(I'm not sure about the relationship between Japanese and American Academy
Awards.)

- Miyazaki will not retire after MH after all! Added an
article (translated by Ryoko) about this and
his next movie.

- Another award for Miyazaki (quoting Ryoko's post):
Miyazaki-San has recieved the Nagaharu Yodogawa Award. Nagaharu Yodogawa is
arguably the most famous movie critic in Japan, and this award is to
commemorate him. Every year, the award committee selects one person who
"has contributed siginificantly to advance the Japanese movie industry
and culture". This year, they selected Miyazaki-San for his works, especially
Mononoke Hime, which broke all the records and will be distributed worldwide.

- Ryoko wrote on the ohmu.nausicaa.net newsgroups:
Kinema Junpo, a prestigious Japanese movie magazine, announced its annual "Best 10
movie list". The list is based on the votes by movie critics, and Mononoke
Hime was No. 2 in the Japanese movie category. No.1 was "Unagi (Eel).
Considering that the tough competition MH faced this year, it's
remarkable that it was voted as No. 2.
More importantly, it was voted as No.1 movie of the year by the readers of
the Kinema Junpo (Unagi was No. 2). Miyazaki-San was also voted as the best
director by readers.
- Also, the European release of MH may be delayed.

$160 million, and the attendance is at over 13,000,000 people.

- MH will be released by Miramax in the US. Quoting
The Hollywood Reporter, Feb 2 (posted on the ML by Shun CHAN):
Miramax Films will create an English-language version of the
Japanese animated blockbuster "Princess Mononoke," as its
Dimension Films division gives the original film a wide U.S.
release this summer.
"Princess Mononoke," produced by Studio Ghibli and directed
by leading Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki, is the highest-
grossing film in Japanese history with a boxoffice topping
$150 million.
"Word of this film's great success and amazing artistry has
certainly traveled to all parts of the world now, and we are
thrilled to be the ones to present it in the U.S.," Miramax
Films president Harvey Weinstein said.
In reference to plans for the film's English-language remake,
Weinstein added, "with great regard for Mr. Miyazaki, our
plan is to maintain the film's unique creative integrity. [....] "

- Martin Opitz reported on the ML about the German release of MH:
I just got this information on the German Anime ML...
MH will be shown (out of competition (I guess this means it's not nominated ?))
on Feb 12 and Feb 13 on the Berlinale in Berlin.
He also reports that the Germany wide theater release is rumored to be on
August 20th 1998.

- BIG rumors this time!! Let's see... Ryoko wrote on the ML:
According to Houchi Shinbun (which is available at Yasuhide Mohri's web
page, at
http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~hn7y-mur/mononoke2/monolink06link16.htm
in Japanese - thanks Mohri-San!), Mononoke Hime will be released in the US
in the end of July. It will be released in more than 2,500 theaters. (If
it's true, Disney is really serious about selling MH in the US).
The article says that they will have a premiere around 7/20 in either NY or
LA, and Mr. and Mrs. Clinton will attend the premiere (according to the
article, Clintons "have been interested in Miyazaki anime".)
Also, the article says that MH will "surely be chosen as one of the 5
nominees for the Best Foreign Language Film category of the Oscar".
According to it, academy voters who saw it loved it, and praised it as
"excellent".
Michael Eisner, the CEO of Disney, also saw it, and praised it as "I was
amazed at its quality. I've never seen [such] an animated movie even from
Disney", according to the article.
(NOTE: This is probably not totally accurate.)
The article says that if MH gets a nomination, Miyazaki-San will come to the
US.
Now, I'm not sure how accurate this article is.
First, Houchi is a "Sports Newspaper", which is an equivalent of British
tabloid (but again, they are often accurate ;).
Second, Houchi is owned by Yomiuri, which owns Nihon TV, which is one of the
investors of MH. So, they have a very good motive to praise MH as high as
possible.
So be warned: This is just rumor for now!
- Also, according to the Houchi Shinbun (again from Mohri-San's web page,
http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~hn7y-mur/mononoke2/monolink06link16.htm ),
Mononoke Hime will be shown at the Berlin Film Festival on Feb. 11th.
Miyazaki-San will attend the festival. He will stay in Germany for a week
or so.
- Another award for MH! According to Mainichi Shimbun
"Mononoke Hime" received The Grand Prize at Mainichi Nihon Eiga
Conkuru (Mainichi Japan Movie Competition). It also received "The Best
Animated Movie Award" and "Japan Movie Fan Award" (an award decided by votes
from fans).
Mainichi movie award is a prestigious award in Japan.
- MH in Italy? Antonio Usai reported on the ML that
according to "Kappa Magazine", number 66, Dec 1997, MH will open
in Italy on the 22nd of May as "La Principessa Mononoke".

- A cool rumor: some Japanese 'sports' newspapers have reported that
Leonardo DiCaprio is being considered for the role of Ashitaka on the
English version of MH. Also, Quentin Tarantino(!) has been mentioned
as possible voice talent (the role was not mentioned).
