Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI)
Presentation were given by Mr Tanaka and Mr Watanabe.
In short, Japan's railway started as early as 1907. Privatised in 1987, RTRI's main function is to support JR new technology (including the current Shinkansen - the bullet train). About 80% of donation is received from JR and the rest is from other railway companies.
There are three (3) basic philosophy of RTRI:
- be independent;
- be self sufficient; and
- be able to introduce the most sophisticated computer system to support the railway development.
RTRI has over 90 years history until today.
General explanation about the booklets / handouts.
- video presentation about RTRI - mainly about Japan Railway JR.
- lecture about Information Systems in this institution; and
- tour in the computer center.
{Intended question}: Over the past one and a half month we are here, there have been at least three railway accidents. How many percent of total Japan's railway accidents are caused by system errors?
Answer: {There is no answer since I didn't manage to ask...} However, according to my course leader and coordinator, there have never been any accidents involving the bullet train (Shinkansen) since its first operation.
