Of course, that's just what I think. 'Nuff said.
In the year 1999 AD, a [meteorite] crashed into Antarctica, causing the Second Impact. The continent was sunk in water and more than 3 billion people died. Sixteen years later, in the year 2015 AD, Ikari Shinji is introduced to the world of NERV, of Evas that fight Angels. It is through his eyes that we get to view the world after the Second Impact. However, that doesn't mean that the view is exclusively Shinji's. We also catch glimpses of the world as seen by the others.
The series uses numerous biblical references. The Evas (Eve?). The Angels. Adam. The Dead Sea Scrolls. The Magi (a.k.a. The Three Wise Men). The naming sounds intentional, connected to THE theme, to SEELE's and Ikari Gendo's agenda: the restructuring of the world. It also seems as if the United Nations has approved the venture.
The series is geared towards more mature audiences. Events and themes can be quite disturbing for younger viewers. I've got to say, though... I loved the series, and I sympathize with Shinji......

Who is Phoebe?
I mean I(n)R(eal)L(ife), silly.
Ask me again how strange it can be....
Excerpt from Episode 14: Weaving a Story, Dubbed Edition, by Rei Ayanami---
Who is this? This is me.
Who am I? What am I? What am I? What am I?
I am I. This object that is, is myself.
That which forms is me. This is the self that can be seen, and yet this is not my part which is myself.
A strange feeling.
My body feels as if it is melting.
I can no longer see myself. My form, my shape, fades from view.
Awareness dawns of someone who is not me.
Who is here, there, beyond me, here?
Shinji.
This person I know. Major Katsuragi.
Dr. Akagi.
People, my classmates
The pilot of Unit Two.
Commander Ikari.
Who are you? Who are you? Who are you?
