Neon Genesis Evangelion

A Phoebe's Domain attraction

Hi! Welcome to my little niche on Neon Genesis Evangelion (a.k.a. Shin Seiki Evangelion). I have to admit that I wasn't particularly thrilled about the series after watching the first tape. But it didn't take long for me to catch on. The series has some really intriguing plot and themes. It's pretty distopianist and it seems Sadamoto's purpose for creating the series is to have an outlet for his thoughts/frustrations. I don't understand absolutely everything about the series (who does?), but the questions presented need to be asked, and the ventures into self gives insight into the true motivation of existence. The themes aren't new (is anything ever?), just the approach.

Of course, that's just what I think. 'Nuff said.

In the year 1999 AD, a [meteorite] crashed into Antarctica, causing the Second Impact. The continent was sunk in water and more than 3 billion people died. Sixteen years later, in the year 2015 AD, Ikari Shinji is introduced to the world of NERV, of Evas that fight Angels. It is through his eyes that we get to view the world after the Second Impact. However, that doesn't mean that the view is exclusively Shinji's. We also catch glimpses of the world as seen by the others.

The series uses numerous biblical references. The Evas (Eve?). The Angels. Adam. The Dead Sea Scrolls. The Magi (a.k.a. The Three Wise Men). The naming sounds intentional, connected to THE theme, to SEELE's and Ikari Gendo's agenda: the restructuring of the world. It also seems as if the United Nations has approved the venture.

The series is geared towards more mature audiences. Events and themes can be quite disturbing for younger viewers. I've got to say, though... I loved the series, and I sympathize with Shinji......

Who is Phoebe?
I mean I(n)R(eal)L(ife), silly.

Ask me again how strange it can be....
Excerpt from Episode 14: Weaving a Story, Dubbed Edition, by Rei Ayanami---

Mountains. Heavy are the mountains,
But that changes with the passage of time.
Sky. Blue sky. What your eyes can't see, what your eyes can see.
Sun. One. Only one.
Water. It is agreeable. Commander Ikari.
Flowers. So many the same, so many without purpose.
Sky. Sky of red. Red the clor, the color I hate.
The liquid flows; the drips ripples and pours. Blood. Scent of blood. Woman who does not bleed.
From the red soil the humans come.
Humans made by man and woman.
City. A human creation.
Eva. A human creation as well.
What are humans? Are they creations of God?
Humans, that which is created by humans.
This is that which is mine, my life, my heart.
I am a vessel for my thoughts. The Entry plug, the throne of my soul.

Who is this? This is me.
Who am I? What am I? What am I? What am I?

I am I. This object that is, is myself.
That which forms is me. This is the self that can be seen, and yet this is not my part which is myself.
A strange feeling.
My body feels as if it is melting.
I can no longer see myself. My form, my shape, fades from view.
Awareness dawns of someone who is not me.
Who is here, there, beyond me, here?
Shinji.
This person I know. Major Katsuragi.
Dr. Akagi.
People, my classmates
The pilot of Unit Two.
Commander Ikari.
Who are you? Who are you? Who are you?

Disclaimer: Yes, I admit it. Neon Genesis Evangelion does not belong to me. Any sick hopes of cashing in on the series must be redirected to its rightful owners.... in Japan.
