Even though Kiki is a witch, she doesn't have any special magic
to harm anyone. Because it is a family tradition that when a little witch turns 13, she has to leave home and test her independence. So on Kiki's 13th birthday, she flies away on her broom with her cat Jiji to find her new home. 
Kiki comes across a town sitting by the sea and decides that this is the place to stay. A very nice women who owns a bakery with her husband lets Kiki stay with them in this new town.
At the beginning, Kiki has a little trouble making friends but later on she meets a girl who is talented in art named Ursula. Kiki also becomes good friends with a boy named Tombo, who is obsessed with flying and planes. Tombo and Kiki have lots of fun playing with Tombo's plane inventions.
Since being a witch allows her to fly on a broom, Kiki comes up with the idea of express delivery of letters and packages with the use of her broom. She calls her new business "Kiki's Delivery Service."
