A Hot Day in Winter
chapter 3
by Top Ace

I know that a lot of people see Kurama and Hiei as "lovers" but according to me and Yoshihiro Togashi, they're not. So I have written a fanfic that is: Not yaoi, not hentai or any of those things. It might be a little bit romantic, but that ain't my problem. (well it is, since I wrote this. Oh well...)

Also, there is a character in here named Verai. She is not related to YYH as far as I can tell, I just use her because I use her name in all the RPGs that I play, and the name is nifty. In this story, Verai is a 20 year old freshman in college.

Verai opened the curtain and saw what she was hoping she would see, but would never admit. There in the rain, was Hiei, dripping wet from the rain. Verai immediately opened the window and asked him what the heck he was doing outside. "I... I wanted... to see you," Hiei managed to utter. He finally looked at her. She was wearing a silk nightgown that was half way down her thighs. She looked stunning, but he would never say that. Verai looked at her mystery man. He was pale, and Verai knew that if she didn't do something for him, he would catch a cold or something. She told him to take off his coat and drop it in the laundry hamper. He did so and Verai grabbed a towel from her bathroom and dried his wet body. Wow! This guy's got muscles, Verai thought as she wiped the rain water off his chest. "Hey, go into the bathroom and dry the rest of you off. You can take a hot shower if you want." Hiei went into the bathroom and took a shower, without saying so much as a "Thanks." But it didn't matter. Verai, you go girl! You've got a hunk taking a shower in your apartment!

When Hiei was done taking a shower, he walked out, with just his towel wrapped around his waist. "Um, do you have any clothes I can borrow?" Verai looked at him, then she answered, "You know what? I'll just put your clothes in the dryer. They'll be dry in 15 minutes. She grabbed his clothes and put them in the dryer. While she was setting the timer, she heard glass breaking and rushed into her room, wondering what was going on.

Hiei grabbed his pants in the bathroom, realizing that Verai had forgotten to get them. "Oh well. They aren't that wet anyway." He pulled his pants on and walked towards his sword. Then he saw the glass break in Verai's room. He immediately ran and pulled out his sword and got ready for battle. The three big, stocky demons had huge muscles and gigantic clubs. Hiei jumped up and hacked at the demons. The three demons blocked his sword, and the battle began.

Verai ran back towards her room when she heard the glass break. What she saw made her so angry that she wanted to scream, but she couldn't because if she did, the demons would see her. She raced to her closet. There, was a staff. She was learning Kung Fu, and the first weapon she mastered was the staff. So she grabbed it and came to help. But when she got back, she saw again what had made her so angry before. Her room was now in complete shambles, and Hiei was starting to tire out. She lunged and hit one of the demons in the back. The demon looked around, saw the human girl and thought, "pretty." So he tried to grab her. But even with her nightgown, she was still pretty agile. She dodged most of his advances. But then a swipe from the demon behind her sent her flying across the room.

"Verai!" Hiei had never felt such anger as he felt now. He used his Fire-Punch attack (If you have seen the second movie, you know what I mean) and pulverized one of the demons. But in his rage, he hadn't noticed the other two demons ganging up behind him and they threw him against the wall. Hiei saw Verai gasp then a weak sensation overwhelmed him and he lay there, unable to move. "So this is how it ends. Damn."

Looking at the two demons who had just beat up Hiei, Verai got into her own sort of rage. But since she was just a human, it couldn't raise her power, could it? She threw her staff down and concentrated her chi into her finger. She had seen her Kung Fu master direct his chi towards a brick and it blew apart. She had never tried it, but it seemed to be her only hope. "Haiiiiiii!"

The chi that she had directed towards the demon who tried to grab her, had blasted a small hole in his arm. "Ahhrooaah!" A cry of pain exploded from the demon's mouth. Now he was really angry. Verai looked at Hiei, and knew that he wouldn't have the energy to get up and save her. She hoped for a miracle...

"Hiei! We're here!" Yusuke and the others jumped through the window and started battling with the demons. Knowing that these must be Hiei's friends and that she could trust them, Verai ran to Hiei. "Hiei, HIEI! Wake up, please?" Verai looked at him, with his eyes closed and blood coming from his mouth. She put him in her lap and cradled him. My mystery man is no more. I know who he is now, but he's gone. Tears welled up and dropped from her eyes.

"Huh? What happened?" Hiei's eyes fluttered open. "Hiei! You're awake!" Kurama, Yusuke, Kuwabara and Verai looked at him with bright shining eyes. "I thought you were dead," Verai said softly. Hiei sat up and looked at his friends. Then Hiei gazed at Verai. This mysterious human girl, the one who had taken him in when he was just a stranger to her. He wondered what was the strange feeling he had each time he looked at her. "We'll meet you back at my noodle shop Hiei," Yusuke said as he and the others left and jumped out the window. Hiei looked back at Verai. She was crying. "Why are you crying?" "You're going to leave, and I might not see you again." Then he did something that amazed even himself. He took her in his arms and kissed her. "I promise I'll see you again. I'll fight a hundred monsters just so I can see you again." Then Hiei walked towards the window, looked back at Verai, smiled and jumped. Verai ran towards the window, looking for any sign of him, but she knew that he was fast, and he would probably be long gone. She turned around and looked at her room. "Now I've got to figure out how to explain this to my landlord..."

Hiei stood on the roof, looking down at the human he had just kissed. He felt funny, leaving her like that, but he knew that if he stayed, she would get in more danger. Hiei looked towards the rising sun, and started jumping to Yusuke's noodle shop, afterwards he would go back to Mukuro and start training again. Hiei glanced back at the ruined apartment room, sighed, and made his way across the roof tops to his next adventure.
