Photographs of Japanese Macaques

Here's the story:

We were driving on a mountain road in Nikko, Japan. Our goal--to find some monkeys! It was beginning to get dark, and I had almost given up hope. Then we saw the signs: "Please do not feed the monkeys." We were on the right track!

So we continued on our way up the winding slope. Before long, we saw one, a large male, sitting on the shoulder of the road. My friends, cameras in hand, shouted excitedly, "Put the window down! Put the window down!" I did, and just as the first photo was snapped, he flew at the open window. "Put the window up!! Put it up!!" everyone screamed. I managed to get the window up in time, and there we were--four freaked-out people with a monkey on the hood.

It was quite dark, but we got a few close-up pictures. After about 10 minutes, he finally jumped off and went to investigate another car which had stopped behind us.

Here are the photographs.

A different monkey, a different day.
