The Starter Set consists of 60 tradable cards plus a holographic
card, 10 damage counters, a starter game guide, and a rule book. With this
set, you and a friend can have simple Pokemon Battles.
One pokemon is the "Active" (battling) Pokemon, while the others are waiting
on the sidelines ("the Bench"). As you accumulate Energy Cards you
can attack or build up your Pokemon's abilities. You can have your Pokemon
retreat (return to the bench) and send out another one of your Pokemon
to battle, but sometimes there's a penalty. There are Trainer Cards
which help you with healing potion and other moves. For example, the Trainer
Card on the left says Gust of Wind: choose one of your opponent's
Benched Pokemon and switch it with his or her Active Pokemon". This
can be an extremely useful card to use if your Opponent has a strong Pokemon
that has been pulverizing your Pokemon. Switch it with a weak Pokemon that
he/she cannot "retreat" and you've just turned the table on them! Sending
out a Pokemon that is extra strong (i.e., Water against Fire Pokemon) will
do twice the damage, but you need to be careful if your Pokemon is the
one with the weakness! Getting the evolved cards are also fun, because
those Pokemon can pack quite a punch!

Evolved Pokemon
MACHAMP (holographic card) needs three Fighting Energy Cards and one other Energy Card to "Seismic Toss" an opponent, which takes away 60 HP. 3 Energy cards are needed to "retreat" Machamp. |
