1999-2000 V.A.Y.O. SCHOLARSHIP / FINANCIAL AID
PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM
V.A.Y.O. scholarship/financial aid program is created to assist current or prospective Texas college undergraduate students who have shown dedicated service and commitment to their community. This program is funded by the Vietnamese-American Youth Organization, a non-profit organization emphasizing community service and cultural heritage appreciation. The main purpose of the scholarship/financial aid program is to encourage dedicated and intelligent individuals to serve their community, particularly the Vietnamese community.
In 1998, V.A.Y.O. contributes the total of $8,000 to the 1999-2000 scholarship/financial aid program. There are three (3) $2,000 two-year scholarships to be awarded to qualified students and two (2) $1,000 one-year scholarships to qualified college Vietnamese student organizations. The scholarships will be distributed at the beginning of each school semester.
For individual applicants, there are three major criteria for selection. First, the applicant must show a level of dedication and commitment to community activities either in the past or present and must exhibit a strong inclination to continue these activities in the future. Second, the applicant must demonstrate an aptitude and desire to complete a degree from an institution of higher education. Third, family and individual financial need will be considered.
For a College Vietnamese Student Organization, there are also three main criteria for selection. First, similar to the individual, the organization must demonstrate a level of commitment and contribution to community service in the past and present as well as a likelihood to continue such a level of service in the future. Second, the organization will be judged by its stated purpose and the goals which it has identified for itself. Third, the organization must detail the intended use of the scholarship.
As emphasized above, community service plays an important role in the selection process of the V.A.Y.O. Scholarship/Financial aid program. V.A.Y.O. is not only interested in developing successful young professionals but also wishes to encourage these individuals to develop a keen sense of community responsibility.
