Best of Tokyo's Tips: Content

Content

This includes relevance and completeness of content, originality of content, accurate information, unique central theme, good grammar and syntax, as well as relevant external links.

Tip: Plan what you want others to see.
Originality of content counts most in pages. Also, the impact of a site in terms of information offered should be at least satisfactory to the intended users. Another thing, the site must also offer a central theme that is unique to it alone.

Tip: Specify the audience.
Generalizing the audience, such as having to cater to all things Japanese would be like asking for the moon. Although such sites could be finished, it would take much of one's time and effort.

Tip: Mimimize self-promotion.
Make your personal biography as an added bonus to your site but neither as the central theme nor the first thing a user has to click. Usually, [auto]biographical pages are boring unless they're historical persons, such as Abraham Lincoln, or newsworthy personalities, such as Jack the Ripper :) or Muhammad Ali. The webmaster's duty is to make a page not much about oneself but about one's interests. And those interests must be linked by a common bond: a theme, a design or similar areas.

Tip: Mind your spelling and grammar.
Use spelling checkers before publishing your pages. Some users are really that nit-pickers but it pays to increase your word power, too.

Tip: Use HTML conventions and codes correctly.
Use validators and checkers which would minimize HTML code errors.

Tip: External links should be relevant to the theme.
Do not link to sites just for the sake of having links. Do not bother putting all links avalable in the search engines, unless of course your site is a search engine clone. If, say, your home page theme is about Sailor Moon, linking to a site about Lunar Eclipses could be acceptable. But, if you link to a site about Home Improvement for no apparent reason except that your Mom tells you to do, better change the theme of your site and leave Sailor Moon out of your page. Doing the latter would only give you headaches from those e-mails you will receive reprimanding your desecration of Sailor Moon.

Tip: Link only when you are authorized to do so.
This includes images -- BMPs, GIFs, jpegs, banners, etc. which are usually protected by copyright. Copyright infringement and plagiarism are considered crimes. You wouldn't like being thrown to jail or pay a hefty sum for a 2 KB image, huh? When in doubt, ask the site's webmaster whether it would be okay to download the image and use it in your pages. More often than not, the webmaster would gladly let you do so and often it will be free of charge.

Tip: Don't bother linking with search engines.
Unless you want to compete with Yahoo! and its kin. An amalgamation of links and search engines are relevant, but users can find their own way to these respective sites. With these links in your pages, chances are viewers of your page will opt to stay on your links rather than going back to your page.
