Road to Stardom
At the age of 12, during 6th grade, Amuro Namie won a singing contest. Two years later, at the age of 14, Amuro and 4 of her classmates formed the group: Super Monkeys under the label Toshiba EMI. On September 12, 1992, the song Mr. USA debuted. Amuro broke off from the group, and the group relocated from Okinawa to Tokyo.
However, in July 1994, Amuro, now 17, rejoined the four under the group name of Amuro Namie with the Super Monkeys. Under this name,
the group released their 4th single, Paradise Train. Later, their 5th single, Try Me was released. The group soon became popular with their 750 thousand sales.
Again, the group ceased to remain intact. The group entirely broke off and formed a group now known as MAX with Mina , Nana , Rina , Reina and as for Namie; she went solo. With the guidance of Tetsuya Komuro, she released the hit Body Feels Exit under the label Avex-Trax on October 25, 1995. On July 22,
1996, The album SWEET 19 BLUES sold over 3.7 million copies in one week, which held the record of most album copies sold in a week. She was the youngest singer to receive the Japan Records Award for this. (However Utada Hikaru surpassed the record with 6 million just recently).
She has influneced much of the Japanese culture as more and more young women seemed more and more like Amuro Namie clones. Like Amuro, they wore high platform shoes, applied artificial tans, highlighted their hair, wore short mini skirts, and grew long painted fingernails.
Current Status
As of October 23, 1997, she has become a young mother, at the age of 20, (and she said she wouldn't need marriage until the age of 30. Her husband Sam Maruyama (TRF) and her had a boy named Haruto on May 19, 1998 1AM. She said she hopes for her child to become a baseball player. As for this, she took the year of 98 off and has been away from music. Other distractions such as the murder of her mother (murdered by her mother's step brother), have kept her distracted from her music. Hopefully, she will recover from the tragedy and be able to go on about her business (as I surely hope for).She has just recently released Respect the Power of Love and Toi et Moi, and a new single is expected July 28, 1999, however rumors say the date has been pushed back until the 4th of August. So, Amuro seems to be coming back to the music industry!
