The Sailor Scout my wife Julie is most like!
As you look at the different personalities and attitudes possessed by the Sailor Scouts, you begin to pick out women (and maybe some men!) that you know. You might say "My sister is like Sailor Mars because she gets angry so easily!" or "My mom is like Sailor Jupiter because she loves to cook!" Well, my wife is a lot like one scout in particular.
It's Sailor Mercury!!!
Some of you might say "Wait a minute--I thought your favorite Sailor Scout is Sailor Jupiter! You've got a whole page on that! How did you end up marrying a girl like Amy/Sailor Mercury?"
Let me say now that I really enjoy the Sailor Moon cartoon a lot. However, IT IS JUST A CARTOON!!! It's something to enjoy, follow, laugh at and identify with; but it is not real! Just because Lita/Sailor Jupiter is my favorite Scout doesn't mean I am going to look for a woman like her to marry! I married Julie for all of her wonderful qualities, some of which are very different from Sailor Mercury!
In my last Sailor Moon Forum, I talked about the fact that no two people are alike and everyone has a lot of different qualities. The characters in Sailor Moon reflect this quite well. My wife and Sailor Mercury share many similar qualities. They DO NOT include having blue hair, wearing a Japanese school uniform and screaming "Mercury... Bubbles.. BLAST!!!"
How Julie is like Sailor Mercury
1. She has short hair. I said it wasn't blue, I didn't say it wasn't short!
2. She is somewhat softspoken and sweet. That is one of the first qualities about Amy and my wife Julie that jumped out at me. Out of all the five main scouts (sorry to those who've seen fansubs of Sailors Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto!), Amy/Sailor Mercury is the sweetest. The only time she wasn't sweet was when she let Raye intimidate her into not supporting Serena as the leader of the Sailor Scouts, not to mention refusing to come to Serena's aid as she battled Vultureman!
It is important that you don't mistake those aforementioned qualities for weekness. Did you notice how bluntly she told Serena to "get it together!" in one episode? Did you ever notice how shrill Amy becomes when she shouts "BLAST!!!" ? When provoked, my wife Julie can become just as shrill!
3. She is very studious. In a recent issue of Mixx-Ine (more specifically in the Sailor Moon manga in that issue), Naoko Tekuchi stated that during the first few years of Sailor Moon, Ami/Sailormercury(JP spelling) was the most popular of all the scouts. No joke! Asian culture stresses studying, cram school, college, etc. My wife, when we were first dating, was working a full time job as Assistant Manager at a Chinese restaurant and going to school full time as well, paying her own way through Univeristy of Houston. Right now, she is in a CPA exam prep course to help her study for that all-important exam. Her hardworking, studious nature is just like Amy/Sailor Mercury!
