Anna Magdalena Interview
Thanx to Trudy for translating this for me, and thanx to Senga for letting me post it!! =)
This interview was done around the time the movie Anna Magdalena came out in HK.
This is the above RA interview but translated into English.

-Interviewer
Takeshi

How much do you think you are like Chan Ka Fu (the name of the role
TK played in Anna Magdalena)?

To a certain extent, I am like him; always working on my own, traveling around, living in hotels...
When I’m off, I usually stay inside hotel rooms...

Have you ever met someone like Yau Muk Yan (the good-for-nothing guy
in the movie), who doesn’t have a stable place of his own and requests to stay at your
place, always borrowing small money from you to gamble (betting on horses) instead of
having a proper job himself, and doing in his life?

Yes, but not exactly like the one in the movie. In Taiwan, young men need to serve the army for two
years. This is a long time and things would have great changes after two years. So, after the service,
some of them may lose their sense of direction and don’t know what to do. They just hang around and
not do anything productive. So, we would talk and thus, I can understand their feelings.

Which part of the movie do you like best?
I like the latter part which was shot in Vietnam. The scenes are very beautiful and the story is like
fairy-tale. It can give me great feelings. (* The part TK meant is the novel written by Chan Ka Fu to
express his hidden love. Many people, including film critics, doesn’t like this part. But I do. --Trudy)

Are you a person who likes imagining things?
Yes.

What is the weirdest imagination you have ever had?
Myself being in another planet.

(At this point, TK was being teased by the interviewer: Did you imagine yourself in another planet playing the guitar, singing "Always Willing?")

Sometimes when I look at the moon, I would think what my feelings would be if I could also see the Earth
right next to the moon.

The movie Anna Magdalena discusses a lot about secret crushes for another person.
When did you first have such a secret love?

Well, it was a long time ago. I think it was in primary school years. It was a girl living in the
same building, the lower story.

Would you tell anyone about such feelings?
No, not at all.

Not even your best friends?
No, I think we all had such experiences. A group of friends trying to share such secrets, claiming
that they wouldn’t tell anyone, but then the next morning, the whole world knew about it.

Some people say that people we fall in love with and the person with whom we get
married with are often very different, and of different types. What do you think about this?

I hope, very much, that it would be the same type. I even think that marriage is
much better than being in love. This is because marriage is a world completely for the two of us.

Do you think it is difficult for you to find a person with whom you love very much?
Yes, I think it is very difficult.

Then, is it difficult for you to say "I love you?"
It would not be difficult if have the feelings.

Do you think you are a romantic person?
I think I was more romantic in the past; now, I am okay I think. Maybe it’s because I am getting older.

Do you think a man and a woman can just be very close friends, but without falling in love?
Yes.

But people say that this is not possible. They must finally become lovers. Do you
think people would misunderstand your relationship?

For people who don’t know us, then they would misunderstand, but if they do, then there would not be a problem.

Do you like sharing your deep feelings with girls?
The truth is that I seldom tell anyone my deep feelings. I don’t even tell my family. So, it’s not
a problem if it’s a boy or a girl.

(At this point, the two girls were screaming: To whom do you tell your secrets? You can’t keep all secrets to yourself...it’s too difficult...don’t you think telling someone may help you solve your problems...blah..blah...)

I think I should deal with my own problems. What I mean is that I don’t tell everything. Only sometimes.

When I look at you, I would think of Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. This feeling is
especially strong when I flip through some Japanese magazines and I can always see you.
Do you have any plans in Japan?

Mostly ads, but also TV programs and films. Actually, there no definite plans. It depends on whether
or not we can get an agreement and arrangements. This is the same in Taiwan and HK.

What do Japanese think of you?
I don’t know. But, I think they regard me as a Hong Kong artist because I first went to Japan for the
promotion of Chungking Express and then Fallen Angels.

As half-Japanese, do you want to establish a career in Japan?
Well, it is kind of a dilemma. At first, I think working in Japan is the most fun because nobody
there knows who I am, and so working there makes me feel like being in my own country, being very free.
But, since I am in the show business, on the one hand, I feel that I am doing jobs in my own country,
but on the other hand, people begin to recognize me and I lose some of the freedom. I don’t know
which is really better.

Do you have any aspirations in the field of movies?
I always want to try different roles, with different characteristics or personalities, without
limits. But, first of all, I want people to watch Chinese movies...

Have you thought of being a director?
I like working in the movie business, but not necessarily to be a director because that may not be work
with the greatest fun.

In your last album, "Always Willing", you wrote quite a lot of the music and lyrics.
Why didn’t you continue? It’s been a long time since you launch the last album.

I have always been writing new tunes. It’s only I don’t put them together into an album.

Why not?
I don’t know. I just don’t feel like doing it now.. I don’t want to do an album just because I need to
have my name on the press, or for the publicity. I have to wait for a moment when I feel that I really need to do it.
