The professor's wife looks decidedly uneasy "Even if you ask, I....I haven't seen Sadako in years. As soon as she graduated from high school, she said that she wanted to become an actress & left home. She joined a theatrical group by the name of Hishou but I guess she must have gotten involved with bad company. Anyway, she hasn't been back since then." She hands the photograph back to Asakawa "Ah, it's late but you can call me if you want to know anything else." She returns to her room & shuts the door....

Returning to the Professor's study, Yoshino says "I wonder what's with her...." "Well, she hasn't seen her in years, I guess it's the same with the picture." "I guess so." Asakawa takes another book from the shelf & suddenly spots an old purse behind it. Taking it out, he looks at it "An old coin purse?" "Is it Shizuko's?" Asakawa opens it, takes out something & unwraps it. Yoshino looks at it "It's a hairclip." Then quickly picking up the photograph, she points to it "Senpai! Isn't it the same as this?" Asakawa takes a closer look at the photograph & looks at the hairclip in Sadako's hair. It's identical. Asakawa ponders "Is that the way it is....Sadako isn't her daughter. She could be the daughter of Professor Ikuma & Yamamura Shizuko. Thinking about it, that's the only way to explain her resemblance to Shizuko. Left without any choices, the professor's wife brings up Sadako as their own." "Perhaps Sadako was unhappy here & left home as soon as she graduated from high school." Asakawa scrutinizes the hairclip & spots a strand of hair on it. Yoshino says "It should be Sadako's, isn't it." "Uhm." As Yoshino turns her attention to some books on the table, Asakawa gives her a surreptitious glance, wraps the hairclip back in the paper & puts it into his pocket. When Yoshino lifts up a huge volume & flips through the pages, Asakawa notices something written on the inside cover. Yoshino looks on enquiringly & then sees what has caught Asakawa's attention "The devil has been set forth into the world. Soon the world will be destroyed by hatred (a consuming grudge)." Yoshino looks up at Asakawa who's frowning deep in thought....

Asakawa pulls up by the side of a road. Yoshino says "Thank you very much. I'll see you tomorrow. We'll check out the theatrical company first thing in the morning. Where shall we meet?" When Asakawa doesn't answer, Yoshino says enquiringly "Senpai?" Asakawa finally says "You go to work tomorrow. In any case you can't take too many days off." Yoshino smiles "It's alright." "No. I'll handle the rest from now on. I don't want you involved any more." The smile disappears from Yoshino's face & she gets back into the car "Why?!" Calmly, Asakawa tells her "Even you should realize how dangerous Sadako is. 'The devil has been set forth into the world. Soon the world will be destroyed by hatred'." Yoshino counters "You can't tell if that's really Sadako's....." but Asakawa cuts her off "The reality is that 5 people are dead having seen that video tape. & not only that. Sadako killed her own mother with that deep seated grudge she bears. Sadako knows of our existence. She even knows our every move." Yoshino replies adamantly "So what?! If it's dangerous then what about you?!" Asakawa firmly insists "I said no." "I'm going." "Don't be stubborn." "I'm not being stubborn!" Asakawa finally raises his voice "That's enough!" Yoshino stares at him & then quietly asks "Do you hate me that much? Am I'm just in your way?" Askawa looks at her with a heavy heart "If I'm gone, who's going to save Yoichi?" Yoshino remains silent.....

Yoshino stares at the car as Asakawa pulls away. As he drives off, Asakawa stares at Yoshino's reflection in the rear view mirror & closes his eyes, sighing......

As soon as he steps into his apartment, Yoichi runs up thrilled "Papa!" Asakawa picks him up "Have you been good?" "Yes!" "Did you thank grandma for looking after you?" Grandma appears & Yoichi quips "Thank you!" Asakawa smiles "I'm back." "Welcome home." Smiles all round as Yoichi hugs his father tightly, not letting go......

Yoshino walks along the street, tears in her eyes......

Happily, Yoichi unwraps his present of toy cars "Yay!" Grandma smiles "That's great!" Sipping on tea, Asakawa stares at his son....

when today ends I'll be left with 8 days...

the time I've got left with Yoichi isn't much

I know that danger right in front of my eyes

is fast approaching.....

When Yoichi's asleep, Asakawa stares at the analysis of the video on the computer......

if these images were really done by Sadako,

5 of the riddles would be solved...

Miharayama is Sakako's hometown

the girl reflected in the mirror is Sadako's mother, Shizuko

'you will give birth to a baby next year'

this would be Shizuko's baby

that would leave only the baby

would that be Sadako herself?

& the man with the wound on his shoulder

just who is that?

At the Musashino Medical University, Miyashita & Nagao are deep in discussion. Nagao says "Abe-kun stole the experiment data?" Miyashita adds "There's a possibility that he's done it many times before." "But whatever for? What use would experiment data be?" "I wonder if he was asked to steal them." Miyashita recalls catching her colleague red-handed " "What are you doing? So it was you who stole those cell cultures." Back in the present, Nagao adds "For sure there are a lot of people in this world who would like to get their hands on our data. For example drug companies could threaten & profit from all this. Those cell cultures....." Miyashita nods.....

Sitting in Mai's room, Takayama recalls Mai reaching out & putting her arms around him in a tight embrace, tears in her eyes. "Mai.....it's alright, there's nothing to worry about....Mai....."

Despondently, Yoshino walks towards the office. Kawamura runs up "Good morning, Yoshino-senpai! Did the material on Professor Ikuma help? Senpai?" Yoshino ignores him, walking into the building.....

With a big sigh, Yoshino sits down at her desk, looking at the pile of work on it. Her boss calls out "Yoshino!" "Yes?" "Clear all that up by today. You've had two days off so it's time to get back to work." Another colleague comes running up "Hey, I heard you went to Oshima?" "How did you know?" "It's a rumor floating around the office." "What's that?" "So who did you go with?" "Does it matter?" "Tell me!" Another colleague comes up & puts a notice on her desk "Yoshino-san, it's Kuramoto's farewell party tonight. You'll come right? We've also made reservations for the restaurant. Alright?" Yoshino gives another sigh when she suddenly spots something on her desk. Picking up a stack of printouts from Takayama Ryuji's homepage, she glances through them, suddenly stopping at one titled "molecular biological testing regarding genetically inherited memory". Her eyes widen as she recalls the journals in Professor Ikuma's study were all related to the same subject "Oh....what if......."

Asakawa arrives at the Hishou theatrical company....

Yoshino goes to Meiwa University to look for Takayama. The guy at the information counter tells her "Takayama-sensei isn't here today." "I see. What about his address?" "I'm afraid I can't tell you that." At that moment, someone calls out "Excuse me, could you come here for a second?" The guy leaves the desk "Coming!" Yoshino turns to leave but something catches her eye. Looking, she sees the records for all the academic staff & employees of the university on the desk.....

Asakawa speaks to the manager Arima, of the theatrical group "This group was founded in Showa 38th year. It got a lot of notice back then when it was established but since then, members have changed. It's been a long time since the media has come to do an interview with us." Asakawa tells him "Actually, I'm not here to do an interview today." "You're not?" "I'm here to look for someone, an actress by the name of Ikuma Sadako." At the mention of Sadako's name, Arima's expression darkens. Asakawa continues "I understand she joined the group in Showa 41st year." "What do you want with her?" "Nothing really, I just came to give her my support. Is she still here?" "No way! She was with the group for only a year. She left all of a sudden. After that I've had no contact with her." "Could you tell me whatever you know? Please?" Reluctantly, the manager replies "Ikuma Sadako was very talented. The moment she stepped onto the stage, she would change completely. It was as if she really became the person in the drama. She had great impact. Not long after she joined the group, she took the leading role of a heroine called Salome in a play. Even now that remains a historical legend in the drama world. Without a doubt, if she had continued on, she would have become Japan's greatest actress of all time." "Why did she leave all of a sudden?" "She eloped. The guy was also a member of the same group. I guess the both of them were attracted to each other's loneliness. That's all I know. I've got to get back to work, my apologies." Arima gets up to leave but Asakawa, not quite ready to end the conversation, adds "But the group at the time...." However Arima, losing his cool, retorts "I really don't know anything else. You're welcome to support & interview us. But if you're here for anything beyond that, then please leave." To the members of the group, Arima barks "Let's continue....."

Asakawa steps out out of the building with a big sigh. As he takes a few steps, someone calls out "Excuse me!" Turning back, he sees a girl who's followed him out "You're here to look for Ikuma Sadako, aren't you?" "Yes, is there anything you know?" "I met her....recently......" Asakawa stares at her, stunned..........

Miyashita enters her lab & walking in, suddenly freezes in her tracks in shocked horror. Staring at the overturn stool & shoes on the ground, she slowly lifts her eyes & looks up, seeing her colleague Abe, hanging from the ceiling, dead......

The police sweep the lab for evidence while outside along the corridor, Nagao consoles Miyashita "It appears to be a suicide. He also left a note." Feeling guilty, Miyashita replies "It's my fault." "What nonsense are you talking about?" "I'm the one who put him in that spot."

Miyashita recalls questioning Abe "Where are those cell cultures?! Say something! What's going on?! Do you know what you've done?! If those cell cultures get released, people might die! If that happens you'll be the one responsible!" Abe, silent all this while, suddenly starts banging his head on the table. Miyashita tries to calm him down "Abe! Stop it!" Abe gasps for air, blood on his forehead.....

Miyashita tells Nagao tearfully "I didn't even think about Abe's feelings at all. He might have even been trying to help me at the time....." "It's not your fault. It would've been reasonable for you to say what you did." Assuring her, Nagao starts walking down the corridor. Miyashita, calming down & trying to regain her composure, suddenly recalls Takayama telling her "You will be stunned into tears of despair at how powerless science can be."

In a cafe by a river, Asakawa sits at a table with the girl he met from the theatrical company, Yagi. She hands him some black & white photographs "This is Ikuma Sadako. But in all of them she's in costume & make up, none of them show what she really looks like. I'm in a play in the role that Sadako used to play." "Salome?" "Yes. I'm feeling a lot of pressure." "So, where did you meet Sadako-san?" "Three days ago in the rehearsal hall, I was rehearsing late into the night. & then at midnight....."

In the hall, Yagi is rehearsing when turning around, she sees Sadako in the role of Salome.....

Asakawa presses urgently "That was Sadako?" "Yes, that's what she said. Of course since I don't know what Sadako looks like, I don't really know if it was her. But if it really was Sadako, she would have played Salome for sure so I asked her "Please play Salome for me now.' Without a doubt, that person was Ikuma Sadako." "Well, many people have the script of Sorome....." "It's not that. Although she was merely muttering the lines from the play, I knew right then....how do I put it.....I was really moved.....& then I asked her to come to the rehearsal hall again. Sadako-san will be coming to the hall again tonight." Asakawa's eyes widen at the news.......

Yoshino presses the doorbell "Hello? Anyone home?" However inside the Takayama home, it appears to be empty. Not getting a reply, Yoshino turns to leave when she suddenly hears the door being unlocked. Turning back, she reaches for the door knob & opens it. Entering, Yoshino looks around curiously. Approaching Mai's room, she sees Mai with her back to her, sitting on the floor playing with some dolls. Yoshino introduces herself "I'm Yoshino from Chuou Shimbun. Is Takayama-san....." Her voice trails off when she suddenly notices that one of Mai's dolls is headless. Mai turns around silently, gives Yoshino a glance before turning her attention back to the headless doll. Uneasily, Yoshino enters Mai's room "I came to see Takayama-san, Takayama Ryuji-san." When Mai ignores her, Yoshino asks "How come that doll doesn't have a head?" Mai suddenly turns around & glares at her. Taken aback, Yoshino quickly mutters "I'm sorry." & gets to her feet. Taking two steps back, she suddenly notices Takayama staring at her "What is it you want?" Yoshino shows him an article regarding his thesis on genetically inherited memory......

Walking outside with the article in hand Yoshino says "The thesis that you wrote is similar to one written in the past. Professor Ikuma Heihachiro's experiments & results appeared in medical journals. You recently visited Professor Ikuma's home, didn't you. I just got confirmation from the professor's wife. You knew that Professor Ikuma & Yamamura Shizuko had a daughter called Sadako between them. You got us to go after Sadako, was it all part of your plan?" Unruffled, Takayama replies "Why do you think that?" Yoshino stops walking & glares at him "You killed Yamamura Shizuko, didn't you!" Takayama pauses in his tracks "I didn't see her in Oshima." Yoshino insists "Just like the way you killed Professor Kaneda....." "Yamamura Shizuko possessed supernatural powers. There's no way that I could ever match her. This is not as simple a game as you think it is." "A game?" "Other than Sadako herself, no one else knows what is the aim of the game she's created. Whether everyone survives or whether everyone dies, the result will be one or the other. There is nothing that you & I can do except what destiny decides." Yoshino & Takayama stare intently at each other. Overhead, a train rushes by, heightening the tension between them.....

Leaning against his car, Asakawa makes a phone call to Miyashita "Rieko-san? There's something I need to discuss with you. Can I come over right now? Rieko-san?" "I'm sorry, I can't help you anymore." "What's happened?"

At a restaurant, Miyashita & Asakawa sit across the table from each other. Taking a sip of his tea, Asakawa says "I used to come here often with my wife." Miyashita replies pensively "I really would like to see Shizuka. It's already been three years, how time flies. Shizuka used to tell me 'You'll never get married'..." The waitress comes up to serve them "Sorry to keep you waiting." Asakawa acknowledges "Thanks." Miyashita continues "I've been really arrogant, thinking that I could do everything by myself. Two days ago when Takayama Ryuji paid me a visit, he told me to stop culturing the cells or something terrible would happen. He said that he could see me stunned into tears of despair at how powerless science could be. It's happening just like he said it would." "No it's not. You're working at the medical university. No matter how you hard you try, there will be people that will die. There will be people that you can save & people that you can't. The majority of experiments end up in failure. That's something to be expected. Even as a news reporter, we make mistakes & end up hurting people. It gets depressing but I don't believe that I am helpless. If I do then that's the end of everything. Those cell cultures have been stolen, but there are around someplace. No matter what sort of illness it is, the human race has been able to overcome it. If you don't think that you are completely helpless, then whatever Takayama Ryuji said is wrong." Miyashita gives a weak smile & Asakawa tells her "Let's eat. The food's getting cold...."

Yoshino attends the farewell party for her colleague but looks like she'd rather be someplace else.....

Walking along the street, Miyashita tells Asakawa "Thanks for everything." Asakawa smiles "I've always wanted to talk to like this." Smiling, Miyashita starts kicking an empty can on the pavement with Asakawa. On an overhead bridge, Yoshino & her colleagues are walking along when Yoshino suddenly spots Asakawa with Miyashita. Yoshino's colleague, tipsy, calls out "Yoshino! Let's go!" but Yoshino continues staring at them without a word.......

Waiting for a cab, Asakawa tells Miyashita "I'm sorry I can't send you home. I'm going to see Ikuma Sadako right now." Miyashita asks "When you see her, are you going to ask her to lift the curse?" Not getting a response, she adds "Curses don't exist in this world." "I think that too. But in reality, whether they do or not, I don't know." "If they do, will that resolve everything?" "I wasn't the only one.....Yoichi saw that video too." A taxi pulls up & Asakawa opens the door for Miyashita "No matter how impossible any leads seem, I won't let anything slip by." Both of them exchange a look of mutual understanding......

Walking towards his car, Asakawa's cell phone rings "Hello?" Takayama replies "I hear you're going to see Ikuma Sadako." "Yes, I'm on my way right now." In his office Takayama looks out the window "You don't know how strong that grudge Sadako holds is. If you get in her way of her plans, you will be killed......just like Shizuko was....." "I don't have any other choice. I can't sit back & wait......" With that, Asakawa ignores Takayama's warning & getting into his car, screeches off.......

Arriving at the rehearsal hall, Asakawa finds Yagi waiting for him. Together they wait....9.25pm......12.08am. Finally, the girl says "I'm sorry." Asakawa sighs & gets to his feet "Let's call it a night." "Ah, wait for me. I'm leaving too. Eh? How come the TV's on?" Asakawa turns back "What's wrong?" Yagi presses the on/off button but the TV remains on, showing only a gray screen with the accompany buzz from the speakers. Asakawa looks around & then his eyes widen in horror as he picks up the connecting cable from the ground. The TV isn't plugged into an electric socket! Both of them exchange horrified glances. Suddenly, the table starts to tremble & a prop of a building column falls, barely missing Asakawa. Stepping away, he backs into Yagi & turning around, he sees her in a trance, a crowbar in her hands! Furiously, she starts attacking Asakawa & struggling to get away, falls to the ground. Missing Asakawa as she swings the crowbar at him, she falls to the ground as she hits the table, a flower vase smashing onto the floor, water splashing onto her. Gasping in a low growl, Yagi holds her hands to her head & then passes out. Asakawa starts to get to his feet when he glances at the TV set. The gray screen & buzz suddenly disappear. Staring at the screen, he sees words slowly appearing "A spell has been cast on you. Hatred gives birth to hatred." Suddenly behind him, Yagi gets to her feet & in a low gruff voice, warns "One in four people will die in this world." Scrambling to his feet, Asakawa looks around frantically before seeing Yagi approach him. Stunned into immobility, Asakawa stares at her as she lifts the crowbar "This world will be destroyed!" Bringing down her hand, the crowbar strikes Asakawa in the chest with a crack. Asakawa stares at her as she passes out & falls to the ground again. Grabbing the crowbar with his hands, Asakawa falls to his knees & then twisting, lands on his back. Tugging with both hands, he manages to pull out the crowbar out. Reaching into his jacket, he takes out Sadako's hairpin, crushed into pieces where the crowbar struck. Relieved & unhurt, Asakawa stares at the unconscious girl. Moving over, Asakawa tries to wake her up, crowbar in hand just in case. She wakes up with a start "What happened?" "You don't remember?" Yagi stares at him blankly & stunned, Asakawa drops the crowbar & gets to his feet in disbelief "You've got to be kidding....." Falling to his knees again, Asakawa bites out grimly "I'll be damned if I'm going to die like this!"

Sitting in his office at his desk, Takayama turns around to see Asakawa at the door saying sarcastically "I regret to say that I have returned alive." Turning away, Takayama coolly says "So Sadako made her appearance." "No, the girl from the theatrical company that I was waiting with tried to kill me." Takayama looks at him, noticing the tear on his jacket. Getting to his feet & approaching Asakawa, Takayama pulls out the cotton padding sticking out of the tear "That was Sadako. Sadako possessed that girl's body. Without a doubt, Sadako was there." Turning & moving away, Takayama adds "When I was in Oshima, I felt an exceptionally strong force of revenge. It was the first time I ever felt afraid. That was Sadako." Asakawa doesn't look surprised "I see. So that's why you're left & came back. Weren't you just afraid of dying?" "What I'm waiting for is more terrifying than death itself!" "A spell has been cast on you. Hatred gives birth to hatred. Sadako said that one in four people in this world will die. & that she would destroy the world." Takayama stares intently at Asakawa "One in four people....." Suddenly Takayama starts laughing cynically "So the game isn't over yet." "What?" "The fun is just about to start." Takayama smiles while on Asakawa's brow, the ready frown appears......

Asakawa returns home & checks in on Yoichi who's sleeping soundly. Sleeping in the same room, Asakawa's mother stirs "Oh, welcome back." "I'm sorry, woke you up." "It's ok. Work's really tough isn't it." Asakawa merely smiles & pulls up the covers over Yoichi. In his own room & lying on his bed, words play in his mind "A spell has been cast on you. Hatred gives birth to hatred. You will give birth to a baby next year."

Visiting Miyashita at the Musashino Medical University, Asakawa asks "The unconsciousness becoming a reality?" "Yes. That girl is playing the lead role for the first time isn't she? She could be feeling the pressure of that role. Playing the same role that a talented Ikuma Sadako played before, she could think of herself as Sadako & put more pressure on herself. Actresses in the first place all want to have the acknowledgement of other people." "But she had the strength to overpower me." "That can also be explained by physical science. It has been shown what people can do if pushed beyond the limits of the human mind. There is a vast difference between the strength that we possess in everyday life & when at faced with a crisis." "Then what about the TV set that was on without being plugged in?" Pondering, Miyashita replies "An oscillator. As long as there's a current, electric waves are possible. Even if the power supply is cut off, it's possible to turn an apparatus on again. Why & for what reason one would want to do something like this, I don't know. There's no need to use supernatural powers to do it though." "Then what I saw was....." "If Sadako really possessed that girl's body, then it's possible that the girl would certainly say something that only Sadako would know." "Only something that Sadako would know?"

In the office, Yoshino dashes about busily "Yuko-chan, please take care of those data for me! Nakayama, get those photographs ready." "Akiko, line 2 for you." "Thanks. Hello, this is Yoshino." "This is Takayama."

Entering into the lab, Miyashita suddenly stops with a shock when she sees her dead colleague Abe at the table, looking through a microscope. He looks up eerily at her, blood on his forehead. With a gasp, Miyashita turns away & shakes her head. Turning back, she sees another assistant instead "What's wrong Miyashita-sensei?" Not replying, Miyashita calms herself, looking puzzled......

Standing at the doorway of Takayama's office, she asks "What is it that you wanted to talk about?" Sitting at his desk, arms folded, Takayama replies "Have you been in touch with Asakawa-san?" "No." "Sadako appeared in front of Asakawa-san last night." Takayama reaches for the notepad on his table & rips out the top sheet scribbled with writing. Handing it to Yoshino, Takayama tells her "These are the words Sadako left behind." Hesitatingly, Yoshino takes it from him. Takayama adds "I've found the answer." "What?" "What you have to do in order to be saved." "What is it?" "If you understand what's written on that note you'll know." Yoshino stares at the note in her hands "Why these words?" "Figure it our yourselves. Whether you live or die depends on you." Yoshino grabs Takayama "If you know then tell us! We're running out of time!" Calmly, Takayama looks at her "Then I'll give you a hint. Alright? Think about it carefully. 'A spell has been cast on you.' This refers to that video tape. 'One in four people in this world will die. The world will be destroyed.' Just one video tape. How do you suppose one in four people will die?" Stunned, Yoshino mutters "That's....that's not possible." "There's only one way. Sadako knows that. Stand in her shoes for a minute & think. What is she trying to get us to do? 'Hatred gives birth to hatred. One in four people will die in this world.' It is an easy mathematical problem. The answer is right in front of your eyes. However, I'm warning you, only death & suffering await." Yoshino stares at Takayama, nothing left to say.......

With Asakawa on his heels, Arima, the manager of the theatrical company stride up the stairs towards the rehearsal hall "Stop this nonsense! I said I didn't know anything more about Sadako! She left with that guy on her own accord! She's got nothing to do with us anymore!" Opening the door into the hall, they suddenly hear a low gruff voice "Don't pretend you don't know!" Arima & Asakawa stare at Yagi who suddenly grabs her head with her hands & starts laughing. Getting to her feet, she walks towards Arima "You know for sure! 32 years ago on this very day, you killed someone! You used me!" Suddenly, her eyes roll upwards & Yagi falls to the ground, passing out. The manager stares in horror "Sadako?" Asakawa, his ears catching what Arima said, asks "Did you say Sadako?" Arima  loses his temper & shoves Asakawa out the door "It's none of your business! Leave!" "What happened 32 years ago?!" "Leave!"

With mathematical books spread out on her desk, Yoshino tries to work out the answer, recalling Takayama's words "It's an easy mathematical problem." When the answer finally dawns on her, Yoshino grimaces & gripping her pen tightly, scratches the workings out until the paper is torn to shreds......

Grabbing books & material off the shelves, Asakawa sits down & delves into them, words ringing in his head "If Sadako really possessed that girl's body, then it's possible that the girl would certainly say something that only Sadako would know." "32 years ago on this very day, you killed someone! You used me!" Asakawa suddenly spots an old news article "Bank employee with stolen cash killed - crushed by falling timber." Thinking, Asakawa recalls the building column prop that barely missed him at the rehearsal hall.....

At home, Takayama stares at the computer "The world will be destroyed." Turning around, he sees Mai standing in the middle of the room staring at him. Getting to his feet, he walks towards her "Don't worry. I'll be with you to the end." Mai puts her arms around him, hugging him. Falling to the ground, they hug each other. Suddenly Mai looks up & stares at a long nail protruding from the wall. Putting her hand on the back of Takayama's head, she grasps a fistful of his hair. Not realizing what Mai is doing, Takayama merely holds her close to him. Mai pushes Takayama back, slowly moving his head towards the nail......

Asakawa drives home to find Yoshino waiting for him. Getting out of the car, Asakawa looks at her "Yoshino, what's wrong?" Staring back at him, she quietly replies "I've found the answer." "The answer? The way to survive? Yoshino?" Without answering, Yoshino starts to cry & buries her head in his shoulders. Asakawa asks again worriedly "What's wrong? What's happened?" but the only answer from Yoshino is the sound of her crying.......
