General information about Sailor Moon...

In North America, Sailor Moon is generally referred to as a cartoon. But, it's not just any cartoon. It's ANIME. Anime, which is Japanese for animation, is a word used by fans worldwide to describe animated works from Japan. Anime has it's own very distinctive style, in both the drawings and the story content. Anime has a huge following not only in Japan, but throughout the world.

Sailor Moon is definitely Anime. Though, it's a bit different than the anime that most people are familiar with(Robotech, Akira, etc...). Sailor Moon has more of an appeal to a younger audience than most other anime. In fact, Sailor Moon was marketed to the 6-12 year old age group.

But, Sailor Moon is still anime. And generally speaking, anime contains more serious and mature storylines and better characterization than does most normal North American cartoons. Thus, Sailor Moon is also popular among people of all ages. A large segment of which, are 20something college students.

Sailor Moon is popular throughout the world. It has been translated into English, as well as... Spanish, Italian, French, German, Chinese, and others.

The origin of Sailor Moon...

This web site mostly deals with the North American version of the Sailor Moon animated series. But, that's certainly not the original Sailor Moon. Below is some information on what led up to the North American version of Sailor Moon.

Sailor Moon started out as a manga. Manga are Japanese comics. Back in 1992, Naoko Takeuchi created what was suppose to be just a one time feature comic for a special edition of a magazine called 'Nakayoshi'. It was called "Codename is Sailor V". It turned out to be rather popular and Toei Animation(a major Japanese animation company) showed interest in animating it.

With all the interest in the 'Sailor V' story, it was decided that it would now become a normal series in the magazine 'Nakayoshi'. And since it would now be a full blown serial comic, Naoko Takeuchi decided to broaden the story beyond just the Sailor V storyline. And thus, SAILOR MOON was born!

Toei Animation then created an animated series based on Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor Moon manga. It quickly became quite popular in Japan. And not long after, was dubbed into other languages and shown throughout the world.

The American company 'DiC Entertainment', bought the English rights to the Sailor Moon animated series. And they edited and dubbed the series into what we all have watched on TV in North America(and other english speaking countries).

The story line of Sailor Moon...

The story begins a thousand years ago. When our moon was home to a great civilization, called the Moon Kingdom. It was ruled by Queen Serenity. Everything was peaceful... Until, the Evil Queen Beryl and her evil forces from the Negaverse attacked. The Moon Kingdom was destroyed. And the evil forces from the Negaverse were about to kill Queen Serenity's daughter, the Moon Princess. Queen Serenity had only one chance to save her daughter and to stop the evil forces of the Negaverse. She used the magical Imperium Silver Crystal. In doing so, her daughter was saved from certain death. But, her daughter was also sent into the distant future, along with everyone around her. Thus... The Moon Princess, her beloved Prince Darian from Earth, and her royal court from the other planets, all were sent one thousand years into the future, on earth.

Their memories were lost to them all. They were all separately living out normal lives as teenagers. Until, The evil forces of the Negaverse once again started to show up and cause trouble on earth. Then the two magical cats(Luna and Artemis), that Queen Serenity had also managed to send to the future to seek out and protect the former Moon Princess and her court, found them one by one, and returned their memories to them. They were also given the power to transform into... The Sailor Scouts!

The Sailor Scouts consist of... Sailor Moon(formerly the Moon Princess), known as Serena in her normal life. Sailor Mercury, known as Amy in her normal life. Sailor Mars, known as Raye in her normal life. Sailor Jupiter, known as Lita in her normal life. Sailor Venus, known as Mina in her normal life. And then there is also Tuxedo Mask(formerly Prince Darian), who is known as Darian in his normal life.

Together they now fight the evil forces of the Negaverse.
