Gaming
(Thunder Force V -- Shooter -- Playstation)
|

|
I must be odd
or something, right? The games I think are some
of the greatest around are oftentimes the most
overlooked. Just like this lil gem, Thunder
Force V: Perfect System.
Working Designs
is really a great company. They seem to have
a real knack for picking out some of the quirkiest
games...or games with excessive plot. Speaking
of plot, just how much does a shooter need,
anyhow? Well, once you have it, you don't wanna
go back.
|
Of course,
plot doesn't make a difference one bit if
the game isn't fun to play. This one is. You
have at first, a single ship to select. Throughout
the stages, you pick up special weapons (a
total of 5 different ones) that you can select
at your will. If you smash up yer ship real
nice-like while using one of these weapons,
you lose it. So don't go getting a laser up
the tail-pipe.
|
|
Most games of
this sort have those nifty little pods that
orbit your ship and deflect any random shots
that come your way. This game has them too,
but 1. adds a bit of strategy to their use
(use them at the expense of hyper-charging
one weapon you've selected) and 2. they even
explain their existance in the Glossary section
(an excellent bonus added just for you). Speaking
of bonuses, the game
|
 |
has plenty of lil secrets for you
to unlock. A nice load of high-resolution pictures
for your viewing enjoyment, a Time-Battle mode which
pits you in the ship of your choice against all of
the bosses of the game, one after another (with a
time limit too!). Oh, that's right, the ship of your
choice. Depending on the button you hold down while
selecting the standard ship (the Gauntlet), you'll
choose one with different attributes. Plus, depending
on how much you've played, you can unlock others.
The likes of the Vasteel and the powered up one you've
used through the later parts of the game. And, that
Glossary section I was telling you about just gets
better and better. If you beat the game on a certain
difficulty, you'll get a mission report from the Gauntlet/Vasteel's
pilot. An EXCELLENT addition.
 |
This game is just a lot of
fun to play. I've gone through this game's
prettier cousin, R-Type Delta, but after finishing
that game, I found myself not as satisfied
as I did with this game.
Working Designs (under their
Spaz logo) sure know what their doing when
taking a game and bringing it over seas. Taking
a game they already love and improving upon
it. A fabulous philosophy which not enough
companies take heed of.

If you love shooters as much as
I do, definately check this one out. It has a pretty
steep learning curve (crank it to the Master setting,
sit back and have a good laugh at yer death), but
was anything but disappointing. Have a good time
trying to find this game, though. It's pretty ancient,
though if you go to www.workingdesigns.com, they'll
probably have a copy sitting right there waiting
for you.
