guide to help Karate Students. This is a helpful tool to understand the Japanese
language while studying Karate. By all means, I'm not the person to be giving
lessons but my wife is Okinawan and she will check it over for me. Hope it helps.

Lets begin with some common
karate phrases:
Standing Position
& Starting Position for Punches and Blocks Exercise
Respecting God
& Sensei
Sit down - Seiza
Eyes closed to God - Sinzen ni Mokuto
Open your eyes - Mokuto Yame
Bow to God - Sinzen ni Rei
Bow to Teacher - Sensei ni Rei
Basic Kicks &
Strikes
- Front Kick (left or right) = Mae geri
- Knife-edge hand strike = Shuto
Basic Punches & Blocks
- Middle Punch = Chudan Tsuki
- Upper Punch = Jodan Tsuki
- Lower Punch = Gedan Tsuki
- Upper Block = Jodan Uke
- Middle Block = Chudan Uke
- Lower Block = Gedan Uke

Greetings & Helpers
- Good Morning = Ohayo Gozaimasu
- Good Afternoon = Konichi-wa
- Good Evening = Komban-wa
- Good Night (as in leaving) = Oyasumi nasai
- My name is Brian = Watashi wa Brian des
- What is your name = O-namae wa doko deska
- Excuse me = Sumimasen
- How are you? = O-Genki deska?
- Fine thank you = Genki des Arigato gozaimas
- Take care of yourself = O-Daijni
- Please = Dozo
- Yes please = Hai dozo
- Thank you = Arigato Gozaimas
- Your welcome = Do Itashimashte
- Yes = Hai
- That's good = Sugoi Des (or) Jozu des
- No thanks = Iie kekoo-desu
- I don't understand = Wakaranai
- I understand = Hai Wakarimasu
