Misato wakes up to find that Shinji has disappeared and she becomes very angry at him. Meanwhile, Shinji is on a train to the countryside. Once there, he meets Kensuke, who is on vacation. Shinji explains to him that he desperately wants to escape Nerv and his father's grasp. Of course, his attempts to do this are of no use and he is brought back to base. He tries to explain to Misato why he wants to leave and, to his surprise, she relents and relieves him of all responsibility. Shinji is taken to the train station, only to be met by an angry Toji who calls him a coward. However, Misato is sitting outside smiling when Shinji finally exits the station.
