JAPANESE WIND CHIMES
Fuurin
A fuurin is a small wind chime made to tinkle in the wind.
People love to hang fuurins from the eaves of their houses during
summer. It creates a feeling of coolness in the hot summer days. Generally
speaking, bells are divided into two kinds, 'kane' and 'suzu'. The fuurin is neither a suzu or a kane but
its shape leans more towards that of a kane. It is made of metal or
glass and it has a delicate and penetrating sound. A rectangular piece of
cardboard (or plastic during these modern days) for catching the breeze
is attached to the wind chimes. Sometimes old Japanese poems are written on
the paper. There are also various types and colors of wind
chimes.
