The first Dragon Ball Z Movie (which most likely takes place before the Saiyajin Saga) is not very big on storyline. Like it ever was. The TV show mostly concentrated on cliffhanger, adrenaline pumping fights that constantly develop over weeks. "The Dead Zone" is worth an evening's watch but there are much better Dragon Ball Z Movies out there.

The first movie involves the main villain, Garlic Jr, and his attempts to bring darkness to the world with the help of the Dragon Balls. But the last ball, (which is on Gohan's hat) is soon caught along with Gohan himself and Chi-Chi and Piccolo are attacked in the process. Enter Goku!

Of course this is Dragon Ball Z, so expect a lot of fighting. The movie, while short, is very fast-paced but don't come in expecting the best fights ever. There are some funny scenes (like when Gohan gets drunk and starts hallucinating.) The dubbing is very good (I'm the only one who seems to think so) and the voices fit every character well, except for Gokuu, (played by Peter Kalamis) who is the only cheesy voice in the movie.

"The Dead Zone" is an enjoyable 60 minutes, but there are other DBZ movies and episodes (and other anime for that matter) that are more worth your time.
