You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. - Matthew 24:6 | ||

Year in Review for Real People Who are the real people? People that count. They work hard, care for their families and contribute to society. They don't sit around smoking pot, dreaming up philosophies and abstract concepts of how to screw the system. Real people are self-reliant, pay taxes and put money into our system, they don't take money out. Real people don't know the meaning of the word "I". |
The big bang
Well, obviously, unless you live in a box, the most important event of the year for anybody and everybody was the terrorist attacks on the US. It affected everybody, whether you want to admit it or not. Thanks to my brother Ron who phoned me as soon as they happened. For a minute in time, everybody in the world understood that there was a difference between right and wrong, good and evil, and showed solidarity with the US. But then that minute passed and when the US had to exercise its right of self-defense (for all you uneducated leftist commie pinkos out there, collective defense is the first and foremost reason for people to form into "communities"), the world reverted to the bullshit it once was. Special mention goes to the Palestinians - if you didn't want the Americans to give a shit about you, you did the right thing. And the Russians - thanks for keeping our oil prices down so it doesn't become a factor in who's ass we have to kiss to defend ourselves. Not thinking of yourselves at a time where you can take advantage shows true friendship, loyalty, and nobility.
The Me Generation is Dead.
That being said, life goes on. The average Joe still has bills to pay, jobs to do and mouths to feed. However, with the sacrifice of our firefighters, policemen, and armed forces - as well as the bravery of the passengers of flight 93 - this event reintroduced and reinforced the understanding that duty and service are the ultimate expressions of heroism, and that it is aquality we can all aspire to. And that as citizens, we have responsibilities that come with the rights and freedoms we all exercise so frequently. Nothing is free, and if you want to be an individualist, go live in Alaska as a hermit. If you care for noone else, noone should care about you either. Dying are political correctness, feminism, and liberalism with the current resurrection of the traditional virtues (prudence, temperance, fortitude, justice) and values: honor, justice, strength, and duty.
Year's best
Who has time to compile Top 10 lists? People with no lives. Considering Al had time to compile reviews for 20 of everything, and the fact that I only recognized one or two on Al's top 20 list, it only proves that that i'm right. So here is a list of Top One's...
Films: Its all based on ROI (return on investment): Top 10s are based on entertainment value and getting your 12 bucks worth ($25 when you have a date) at the boxoffice. Everything else should be watched on tv. Note: real movie reviews should never use words like beautiful, emotional, sweet, or lovely.
Lord of the Rings. Hands down. If anyone thinks that any other film was better than this one last year, you're on fucking drugs. Great flick and all round best entertainment value. Worth the price of admission more than once. And without swearing, sex, or gory violence, its also great for kids (though it may be scary for really young ones). Honorable mention goes to Blackhawk Down.
CD: U2. The greatest band of all time shows their musical evolution in their latest CD.
Songs: America the Beautiful. Who cares if it's Celine Dion? It would still be the number one song this year if it was sung by Kermit the Frog.
TV: fiction: CSI. Great show and, together with the West Wing, the only one worth taping this season. Solid entertainment. What else can we expect from Jerry Bruckheimer?
TV: non-fiction: 9-11 coverage. Again, hands down. It would've been Crocodile Hunter for its wit and entertainment value, but the attack blew everything else away. Who was not glued to the tv on that day? Well, if you're Alan and got your tv stolen, that may be an excuse, but this was the most important international event since the Collapse of Communism in the late 80s, and if you didn't watch it - you're a moron. Truly important events get proper airtime from all networks, around the world, around the clock. This was true of the Cuban Missile Crisis (63), the Collapse of Communism and Tiananmen Square (both 89).
Phrase of the Year: Originally attributed to Todd Beamer, Flight 93, and later used as a rallying cry by George Bush for a nation at war: "Let's Roll!"
