Ukyo Kuonji is the daughter of an Okonomiyaki cook with his own okonomiyaki cart. When she was a small child, she met Ranma Satotome, whose father had just taken from his mother on a training trip. When Ranma first saw Ukyo, she decided to make a game that if he takes Ukyo's okonomiyaki, Ranma gets to keep it. If not, Ukyo still has the okonomiyaki. Ranma usually wins at this game and started a short friendship. This game was friendly ,because Ukyo drew pictures (with sauce) for Ranma. Besides the fact that Ukyo is a girl, Ranma thought that Ukyo was another little boy. One fateful day, Ukyo's father, who was hoping for an early retirement and Ukyo wanted to marry Ranma, he offered Ukyo's hand in marriage to Ranma when the two children came of age. Genma declined at first, because Ranma already had a fiancee. When Mr. Kuonji threw his Okonomiyaki cart as a dalory, Genma couldn't resist.
Not wanting to stain his own honor, he asked young Ranma which he liked better, Ukyo or okonomiyaki. Ranma answered, "Okonomiyaki!",not knowing her wishes and the fact that Ukyo is a girl. Genma took the cart, and abandoned the little girl. She didn't see Ranma or his father again for ten years.
In the meantime, Ukyo had been jilted and humiliated. So she gave up her existence as a girl, and lived as a boy. She vowed to be the best okonomiyaki cook in all Japan, and like in a samurai movie, she cooked okonomiyaki against the raging seas. She also vowed to get revenge on Genma and Ranma Satotome. When she was sixteen, she transferred to Furinken High School, seeking to beat up Ranma. After challenging Ranma to a duel, the martial artist beat her handily, and accidentally found out that Ukyo's really was a girl. Trying to make up for past injuries, Ranma told Ukyo's she was cute, and would have no trouble finding a husband. Ukyo's realized that she really only wanted the man she was already engaged to!
In Japan, she started an okonomiyaki restaurant called "Ucchan's" (Ranma used to call her that nickname in her early childhood). Unlike other Ranma's many suitors, she doesn't want to fight Akane, instead she wants Ryouga to go out with Akane and she hopes that Akane to forget about Ran-Chan. That means, she will finally go out with Ran-Chan. It won't be likely for that to happen, because Ranma seems that he doesn't want any of his fiances.
