Templo o santuario? No es fácil distinguir a primera vista un templo budista de un santuario sintoísta. La mayoría de las veces sólo los distingue la presencia o ausencia de un TORII (un pórtico que siempre hay en lo que sería la entrada a la finca) o las cuerdas de paja trenzada con tiras de papel colgando (para alejar a los malos espíritus); Estos son signos inevitables de que se trata de un santuario sintoísta. Pero aun así podemos confundirnos, porque suelen estar uno junto al otro...Temple or shrine? It's not easy at first sight to distinguish between a budhist temple or a sintoist shrine. Most of the times the only hint you can get is looking if there is or not a TORII (a gate that is placed at the entrance of the sacred land) or the ropes made of straw where hang some papers (to keep away bad spirits); these are signs of sintoist shrine. But still, we can guess wrong, as both are usually together...

De izquierda a derecha/From left to right/左から右まで: Efectivamente, es habitual el oir decir que los japoneses nacen sintoístas y mueren budistas. En realidad, pracican estas dos religiones a lo largo de toda su vida, pero resulta que el sintoísmo (de origen puramente Japonés) está más relacionado con bautizos, apertura de tiendas, matrimonios... Mientras que el budismo (importado de China, India y Corea) está más bien centrado en el culto a los antepasados.
As a matter of fact, it's usual to hear phrases saying that japanese are born being sintoist and die being budhist. Both religions are practised at the same time, actually, but sintoism (solely originated in Japan) is more related to births, opening of shops, marriages... Whereas budhism (imported from China, India and Korea) is more centered on the cult for ancestors.

De izquierda a derecha/From left to right/左から右まで: Los más famosos son los templos de Kyoto, algunos de los pocos que sobrevivieron a los desastres naturales (terremotos y fuegos) o los bombardeos de la 2a G.M. Varios de ellos son centenarios y aun así conservan su belleza original.
Most famous ones are the temples of Kyoto, some of the few ones that survived the natural desasters (earthquakes and fires) or bombing during the 2nd W.W. Some of them are several hundred years old and still keep their original beauty.

La verdad es que me fascinaron estas viejas construcciones desde que me topé con ellas por primera vez. Y las de Kyoto, con sus hermos&ieacute;simos jardines, creo que son mis preferidas.
To tell the truth, i was fascinated by these old buildings ever since i first poped in front of one. And the ones in Kyoto, together with their very beautiful gardens, i'd say they're my favourites.

Yo no soy el único que hace fotos a los templos. Como se puede ver, hay japoneses que, como yo, tratan de grabar una imagen que la memoria más tarde o más temprano difuminará, y otros que se toman la cosa más en serio...
I am not the only one who takes pictures of the temples. As can be seen, there are japanese who, just like me, try to record an image that memory will fade out sooner or later, and some others who take this subject more seriously...
