THE ROOSEVELT MEMORIAL

Statue of FDR with his dog.

They who seek to establish systems of government based on the regimentation of all human beings by a handful of individual rulers... call this a new order. It is not new and it is not order.

My parents with a statue of FDR in his wheelchair.
Detail of FDR's hand from the statue of FDR and wheelchair.

This picture at left shows my parents standing near a statue of FDR in his wheelchair. Roosevelt designed his wheelchair himself, using a kitchen chair, two bicycle wheels, and two tricycle wheels.

As shown in the detail of Roosevelt's hand above, the body of the statue shown at left has an unusual, almost unfinished texture. My parents didn't care for it; I rather liked it.

Waterfall in the FDR Memorial.

The Roosevelt Memorial is beutifully laid out in four areas, each devoted to one of Roosevelt's terms as President. The Memorial is decorated with beds of azalias (below) and waterfalls (left).

Landscaping in the FDR Memorial--rough stone walls and azalias.

We must scrupulously guard the civil rights and civil liberties of all our citizens, whatever their background. We must remember that any oppression, any injustice, any hatred, is a wedge designed to attack our civilization.
