We will also continue to update our pages so that you will be provided with the most current information on Traveling in Portugal. Have a great trip.

Still not completely sure of your itinerary. Take a second and check it with our Trip Planner. It will acquaint you with what the various sections of the country have to offer you.

General

You will need a valid passport. U.S. visitors are permitted to remain in the country for 90 days without a Visa. Some EU citizens may be required to check in. You may drive in Portugal with a valid US license. However if you plan to go on to Spain you should get an international license.

Crime is not a major problem but beware of pickpockets especially in major cities and when riding on public transportation. DO NOT leave your belongings in the back seat of your rental car when you park.

The Highway system is very good and has improved with each visit. You will have very little trouble going from Lisbon to any of the major towns. Make sure that you have a current map. New highways spring up all over everyday. I usually use the map given to me by the car rental firm. I've also driven on some secondary and some non secondary roads and had no problems.

Major credit cards are accepted by most establishments but I would suggest a few travelers checks to exchange into local money for the out of the way locations.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

I highly suggest that you use a travel agent that knows Portugal and specializes in Portugal Holidays. I've used Sun Travel for my trips and have been very happy with their knowledge and the arrangements that they have made.

You may request information from Sun Travel 619-222-2786 in San Diego Calif. who is listed as a tour operator who specializes in Portugal Sun Travel ........Or drop an E-Mail Sun Travel

CAR RENTALS AND PLANNING MAPS

All, the major car rental firms, (Hertz, AVIS, etc. Leave Site), have space at the Lisbon airport. If you chose to rent a car, I suggest that you make the reservations prior to leaving the United States. If you do not drive a stick shift, make it known before you rent the car. Most of the rentals are stick shifts.

You do not need a car to get around Lisbon and the suburbs. Public transportation and the taxis are quite adequate. Also parking in Lisbon can be difficult. I usually pick up the car on the day that I am leaving Lisbon. The rental companies have pickup locations in Lisbon. Upon leaving I drop the car at the Airport location. For your connivance I have included a mileage chart. Some of my maps are also available on this site for planning purposes.

However, you may consider is Executive Limousine Services & Excursions. They provide transfers to and from the airport, TOURS all over Portugal, daily tours in Lisbon and surrounding localities, and tours of Jewish Heritage dating back to the eleventh century. They have Mercedes Vans and Buses and are fluent in English, Portuguese, Italian and Spanish. You may call Peter Feijão at Tel: 011 351 21 4531001 or E-mail him for more information.

I found this map site recently and it does a pretty good job you might take a look at it. It is the Shell Site. Leave Site
