Air Portugal

We flew over and back on (TAP) Air Portugal-- 800-221-7370. They have flights leaving from JFK and Newark. We took the flight out of Newark because of its convenience to Philadelphia. This flight is non-stop to Lisbon and arrives at 6:30 or 7:30AM (depending on DST) which gives you the first full day in Lisbon. The flights left and arrived on time. The in flight service was extremely good and the TAP personnel made you feel very much at home. It was enjoyable to fly on an airline that gives you the impression that they were there to serve you.

We have flown on Air Portugal (TAP) for nine and half-transatlantic flights, one from London to Lisbon, one round trip to Madeira and one round trip to the Azores. On every flight, we have been impressed with the quality of service and the friendliness of the flight crew. For more information on the airline please visit their site:

Another airline that services Lisbon directly from Newark airport is Continental Airlines. You are leaving this site  Newark is one of Continental's fastest growing hubs with the addition of 38 destinations since 1995. For more information please visit their Web site.

Other carriers serving Lisbon will connect via Major European city hubs to Portugal.

We have also used TAP Air Portugal Tours - 800-247-8686 in planning three of our trips or you may call MANOR HOUSES OF PORTUGAL or e-mail manors@manorhouses.com. I've been very satisfied with their recommendations on places to see and the accommodations at those locations. They really know the country - well they should. So if your travel agent needs some help, give them a call or get in contact with them..

TAP Airbus

When they turned the cabin lights in the TAP Airbus-310 back on, I began felling the anticipation of arriving in Portugal. Now they had finished serving breakfast and I was looking out the plane window for the approaching lights of Lisbon. Funny how, your body starts adjusting to the moment. While my body clock was still indicating 1AM in the morning, I knew that it was 6AM Lisbon time.

The captain announced that we would be making landfall soon at Cabo da Roca. Then proceed up the river Tagus past Cascais and Estoril and then turn in for a short final to the Lisbon airport

Cabo da Roca

The plane touched down rather smoothly on the runway. Several passengers were showing their approval by applauding. As a former pilot, I never knew whether to take the applause as a compliment or an insult (good landing or thank God he got it down). The plane soon cleared the active runway and taxied to the unloading point.

To my surprise they opened both the front and the rear exits. I always thought that it was a little silly to exit two hundred or so passengers through just a front door. Since we were sitting in back, it was nice to be able to get off the plane rather quickly. After a short ride on the bus, we were at the airport terminal.

Baggage service, Passport Control and Customs were extremely prompt and courteous. Very little time elapsed and there was no problem going through Customs. If you're from the United States, you may stay in Portugal for Ninety (90) days without a Visa.

It wasn't long before we exited the terminal and were in a cab headed for our Hotel in Lisbon.

Environs of Lisbon

Day trips by car, bus or train can cover many areas that are close to Lisbon. Closest to Lisbon are the fine beaches of Cascais and Estoril only ten miles west. A few miles inland from these beaches stands the forests of  Sintra , a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its charm and fascinating palaces. A little further north is Queluz with its delicate palace and a little further on Mafra with its rich Baroque monastery.

Great Deals on Car Rentals

Whole day trips to Óbidos, Batalha, Nazaré and Fátima are also available. Just south of Lisbon is Setúbal and the beaches along the Arrábida mountain range.

A train link across the Tagus is also now open. This line links that city with the south bank suburbs via a second deck on the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge. You may board at most of the cities railway stations. So enjoy your ride in the ultra modern double deck trains that are equipped with air conditioning and background music.

To assist you in planning your trip, asking questions and saying what you liked or didn't like, I have set up a new forum for this Discover Portugal questions and answers Please visit it.

Oriental Station

Oriental Station

Recently a number of people recommended that I take the ride out the new metro line to the Oriental Station. This was the station developed for Expo 98 and now for the new Parque das Nações

On our trips to Portugal, we have spent over fifty-one days in Lisbon and have not seen all of it yet. Yes, you can probably see most of the museums and tourist attractions in a few days, but you haven't seen the city and its people in that time.

In the Lisbon Pages, Hugo Carvalho provides you with five scenic walking tours of the City of Lisbon. So for you convince and pleasure, I have provided you with the link to these descriptions of the City of Lisbon.
