Traveling in Northern Portugal

As you travel eastward along the Douro you enter some of the most beautiful countryside in the world. You enter the Côa Valley roughly following route IP-2. To the North is Bragança and the Parque Natural de Montesinho which is one of the wildest areas in Europe. To the south of Moncorvo is the Parque Arqueológico do Vale do Côa which has been declared a WORLD HERITAGE SITE.

Foz Côa, Rupert Art 

In 1994 at Vale do Côa, rupert art was found in the area, estimated to be 20,000 years old, (18,000 B.C.) over passing the age of identical art found in Lascaux, France (15,000 B.C.) and Altamira Spain (13,000 B.C.).

Côa Valley Archaeological Park

The Portuguese government decided to create an archaeological park to study, research and display the engravings found in the region.

Visits are limited to small groups and reservations must be made in advance.

Quinta de Ervamoira

Located in the Côa Valley Archaeological Park, from where visitors are offered an extraordinary landscape and scenery of the Côa banks river.

On the estate main building exists a small museum dedicated to the archeological station that functions here.

This agricultural property has over half a million vines planted on two hundred hectares of land around the main house.

If you visit the Foz Côa, the guides may take you by SUV (sports utility vehicle) to the Quinta.

Another way to get there, if you are courageous enough, is by mountain bike on tracks pre-selected by Bike Clubs.

In either case, you must have a great spirit of adventure to travel to the Ervamoira Estate.
