Introduction

The Georgette Heyer Listserv is run by Eileen Kendall for the purpose of discussing the works of Georgette Heyer. It is a very informal, friendly group that is fascinated with the period of history known as Regency England as well as the other periods of history depicted in Heyer's novels. Although the groups reads a single novel together, comments about all of Heyer's works or the Regency Era are welcomed. Challenges in the form of a quote requesting the members to provide the novel and circumstances are issued regularly. Sally Houghton updates the challenges on the web.

Guidelines

I have decided that with new folks joining from time to time that I would remind all members the basic guidelines that we have for the list and some technical tips. Please read this long missive. You might also wish to keep it handy. Most of the ideas are based on standard netiquitte and also on what we have learned during our list life.

Please pay particular attention to the guidelines on quoting and labeling subjects correctly. THANKS.

This information is provided to remind members of the guidelines for posting on this list and to assist in managing list mail.

  1. Review the Listserv Commands.
  2. In addition to general discussion of Heyer writings, we read novels together.

By joining the list you agree to follow these guidelines:

  1. All list postings must have an appropriate and pertinent subject in your subject line so that we can tell what your mail is about. Postings about a specific book under discussion must use the chosen acronym for that book (i.e., COT was for Cotillion). Off-topic posts must contain OT.
  2. Signature lines must not be over 3 lines in length.
  3. Excessive quoting (i.e., with >>> or other ways) is strongly discouraged. Edit quotes to just the pertinent part that you are refering to. Nested quoting should not be done unless your post will not be understood without it. The rule of thumb is that unless a quote is very short it should be one-third or less than the original material you are adding.
  4. "Me too" posts are strongly discouraged. (i.e, quoting an entire post and adding one line of agreement at the end.) Wait until you have more to add to the thread before replying.
  5. Responses to challenges should go back directly to the challenger. The challenger will then collect all the incorrect and correct responses and send it to the list when the answer is found. We do one challenge a day (whoever gets it in first), and specify the date on the subject line. There is also a special challenger who issues a challenge every other day in addition to the regular one.
  6. Personal mail must go directly to the person rather than thru the Listserv. This goes for administrative questions to the maintainer as well.
  7. Do not post copyrighted material to the list.
  8. Read all the list mail in your inbox before replying to a topic. Another person may have already answered a request. You may also wish to read all your mail and then post a larger note addressing multiple topics. Since each member is allowed 5 posts per day this may be the best way to conserve your posts and relieve inbox congestion.

We also offer a few guidelines on what is and what is not on-topic. Although off-topic posts are allowed, you must preface the off-topic subject with the term OT. The "patroness" of the list reserves the right to end or postpone discussion of threads. This will ensure that we do not lose the focus of the list.

Off-Topic Subjects

This list of off-topics is not all inclusive. Any topic that does not fit in the ON-TOPIC list must be prefaced with OT in the subject line. This does not mean that Off-topic subjects cannot be posted. Only that you should think twice about continuing an off-topic thread. Then you may wish to think a third and fourth time. Then you may wish to continue the discussion in private emails rather than the list. Continuing off-topic threads on the list increases work for the list owner who must maintain the archives. You may also wish to consider whether the majority of the other 200 members are interested in continuting this thread.

  1. Other favorite authors if the post is not directly related to Heyer. For instance, initial Sayers and Christie comparisons are On Topic - when we go off to discuss their books separately - that is off-topic and should continue privately or on another list.
  2. Your cousin's brother-in-law's eye colour (or color)
  3. Social and Class attitudes generally in the world today
  4. Movies or adaptations that are not regency, Austen, etc.
  5. Emails that are meant for only 1 or 2 list members including challenge guesses and requests to buy a book. These must go back directly to the challenger or the book seller.
  6. Requests for help running list commands. Send these to the list owner.
  7. Virus warnings

How the Heyer Challenge Works

A challenge is a quote or passage from a Heyer novel where all list members are challenged to name the book and circumstances in the passage. All list members are eligible to issue and answer challenges.

Responses to challenges should go back directly to the challenger. Challengers must remember to put their email address in the body of the note since not all email systems show this for all users. The challenger will then collect all the incorrect and correct responses and send it to the list when the answer is found. We do one challenge a day (whoever gets it in first), and specify the date on the subject line.

There is also a special challenger who issues a challenge every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This is addition to the daily challenge that may or may not be issued. This special challenger role will ensure that we at least get 3 challenges per week.

The challenger will let 48 hours or the weekend elapsed before giving away the answer. The challenger who receives all the guesses is in the best position to tell who got the correct answer first and will identify that person when the answers and guesses are posted to the list. But it is really not a competitive game. There are no prizes - just a brief moment of cyber-glory!

Right now we are allowing the first 3 correct respondents to choose a waltz with the Heyer character of their choice. Either 2 waltzes with 1 character or 1 each with 2 characters.

The Archives

All posts are archived and accessible via the web and e-mail for list members. These archives are private and you must set up a Listserv password in order to have access to them. The section below, Obtaining a Password, explains how this is done. To alleviate the problem of having to frequently enter your e-mail account and password use the Back to main Heyer menu link to navigate throughout the archive logs and searches.

Remember that when the term archive is used that means all postings since March 16, 1997 (except for old book discussions that are manually added by the list maintainer). Another term for this is NOTEBOOK LOG. There are also FILES available that the maintainer must put on the server manually. FILE Archives are NOT searchable nor are they available on the web. They must be downloaded in their enitirety using the Get File command.
