The Ancient Art of Raku

Raku is a porous clay fired in a kiln at around 1800 degrees and then placed in a container with an organic combustible material such as straw or newspaper.

Heating and cooling alternate and result in pieces of original Raku pottery.

Chojiro began this Japanese ceramic tradition in the late 16th Century. It has lasted in his family through 15 generations to the present day.

Chojiro's first Raku creation was a ceremonial tea bowl that was hand-formed rather than thrown on a wheel. This process allows more of the artist's spirit to enter each piece.
