SE-MA-FOR's website explains the company's history: "SE-MA-FOR Film Studio from Lodz came into being in 1947 and is the oldest producer of animated films in Poland. It specializes in puppet animation, cutout techniques, cartoons, combined techniques and live action films...In the year 1999 the state SEMAFOR Film Studio was put into liquidation. After the court ordered the Studio to be wound up, in November 1999 a group of employees in the Studio, full of good intentions to continue the SEMAFOR Studio tradition of producing animated films, especially puppet films, officially set up a producers' company and registered it with an appropriate registrar of companies in Lodz, Poland on 20 December 1999. The Chairman of the Committee of Cinematography gave his consent to use the name “SE-MA-FOR” Film Production."

All film rights for SEMAFOR productions from 1947-1999 have been transferred to the Polish National Filmotheque (www.fn.org.pl), a Polish state organization. Rights to all subsequent animation productions belong to the newly organized SE-MA-FOR. Famous directors who have worked with the company include Roman Polanski [website], Zbigniew Rybczynski [website], Janusz Majewski, Daniel Szczechura, Andrzej Baranski, Piotr Dumala [interview], and Tadeusz Wilkosz.

Tadeusz Wilkosz (a brief bio)

(b. 1934) Reżyser, scenarzysta i scenograf filmów animowanych. Absolwent Wydziału Grafiki Filmowej Wyższej Szkoły Przemysłu Artystycznego (UMPRUM) w Pradze (1956). Po praktyce w czeskich wytwórniach filmów animowanych związany od 1958 r. z łódzkim SE-MA-FORem. Członek SFP od 1970 r., ZAiKSu i ASIFA. , laureat licznych nagród artystycznych i państwowych.

(b. 1934) Director, screenwriter and set designer of animated films. Graduated at the Department of Film Graphics at the Academy of Applied Arts (UMPRUM) in Prague (1956). After having trained in Czech Animated Films Studios, he has been working with the SE-MA-FOR studio in Lodz since 1958. A member of the Association of Polish Filmmakers since 1970, member of ZaiKS (Union of Stage Authors and Composers) and ASIFA. (International Animated Film Association), laureate of numerous artistic and national awards.

Albert Barillé (a brief bio):

Upon return to France in 1962 after a stay in the USA, Albert Barillé created the production company Procidis. His first series was "Colargol" with stop motion animation sub-contracted to SeMaFor Studios in Poland. Following this, the series "Il était une fois..." made Procidis famous worldwide with a new kind of educational animation tackling subjects like the history of humanity, biology, outer space, and the Americas. In 1988, "Il était une fois...la vie" was awarded a '7 d'or' (Emmy equivalent) for best children's program. It has been broadcast in more than 20 countries.
